Vedas Series- 1 : 10 Principal Upanishads (Vedanta)

This is a good site that entails upanishads to their corresponding vedas:

Upanishad in Sanskrit means "Sit near or closer" with Rishis (Seers) to learn about spiritual subjects.

The ten Principal Upanishads are:

  1. Īśā (IsUp), Yajurveda
  2. Kena (KeUp), Samaveda
  3. Kaṭha (KaUp), Yajurveda
  4. Praśna (PrUp), Atharvaveda
  5. Muṇḍaka (MuUp), Atharvaveda
  6. Māṇḍūkya (MaUp), Atharvaveda
  7. Taittirīya (TaiUp), Yajurveda
  8. Aitareya, (AiUp), Rigveda
  9. Chāndogya (ChhUp), Samaveda
  10. Bṛhadāraṇyaka (BṛUp), Yajurveda

Upanishads were merged into vedas, much later after the original Vedas which comprised hymns for ceremonial sacrifices, praises to Demi-Gods (Devatas), Astral histories, and others.

These Upanishads are added to the Vedas at the end, so it earned the name of Veda-anta ("anta" meaning end in Sanskrit). Upanishads discussed consciousness, meditation, and philosophy.

All Advaitic (Non-Dualistic form) Schools ultimately derive directly or indirectly and partially or fully from the Upanishads or Vedantas. Adi-Shankara and Ramanuja have referred to these Upanishads and their respective religious systems of Advaita/ Vishista-Advaita have a DNA or flavor of these Upanishads.

Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Math today is a big monastery that is dedicated to Upanishads and Vedantic studies and training monks in it. I visited the Vedantic Society of Ramakrishna in Houston, they have a library dedicated to Vednatic Study.

So, anyone interested or wanting to scan the philosophy of Advaita or Vedanta will hear about these 10 principal Upanishads again and again, or other inspirational works will be based upon these 10 Upanishads.

    • Thanks for posting this.

      • Nice intro to the origins of Advaita and its source. When I first became interested in yoga in this life. I thought that Advaita was synonymous with Yoga. At the time, I had no clue about the term Advaita, but I began to assimilate the teachings of famous gurus which I later learned was an Advaitic philosophy.

My experience is that some teachers do not provide these source scriptures to students to reference their philosophies. That creates a handicap for western students in particular, most of which are without a background in the Indian systems in this life.

Thanks for laying out the references.
