Black Outs / Kundalini Yoga

Black Outs / Kundalini Yoga

Black outs are caused by holding the breath where there is insufficient oxygen in the system and too much carbon dioxide, such that the kundalini switches to using carbon dioxide only because the reserve of oxygen was depleted.

How can this happen just after a session of rapid breaths?

It can happen if the system (lungs) did not absorb much of the air which was being inhaled, where the air entered the lungs but the lungs refused to absorb much of the fresh air, such that during the pause when the student ceased breathing and applied locks, the kundalini noticed that action and used whatever little fresh air there was, and then switched to using carbon dioxide, where the observing self had no idea of kundalini’s actions like this.

It is important to realize that if you see a video of a teacher and he holds his breath for say 30 seconds or 300 seconds, that does not mean that you should do that because if you do and your system did the same amount of rapid breaths but did not absorb the fresh air, it means that if, after say 10 of those 30 seconds the kundalini did not have a reserve of fresh air left and switched to using carbon dioxide, that student will fall to the ground and will experience a black out which is a samadhi but is a jada samadhi with jada meaning stupor in English.

What should the student do?

The student should only hold the breath for as long as it takes for the kundalini to distribute whatever little or much fresh air was absorbed through the lungs during the rapid breaths. As soon as the fresh air is used up say in 5 seconds or 10 seconds, the student should begin breathing again instead of mimicking the teacher whose body absorbs a greater percentage of the air which enters his lungs.

How can a student get his lungs to increase the amount of fresh air it absorbs with each breath?

The student cannot achieve this by forcing the lungs to increase the efficiency. However, if the student practices, then over time, he will find that his lungs begin to change their attitude and the percentage of fresh air absorbed will increase. It will take weeks, months or years to achieve this. There is no set time for it. Each student will find that it takes a different period of time to achieve this.

    • Depending on how long one has been practicing, one’s predisposition to practice, as well as the level of proficiency, the above information can be supplemented with additional clarification.

Initially, the above explanation is invariably what is taking place, particularly when the oxygenation of the bodies is not yet happening on a deeper level. Overtime with the sustained application, the subtle body responds more efficiently to the practice, as the yogins’ subtle body is more fined tuned from developing a more internalized practice.

But that is because as previously expanded upon the practitioner becomes aware of the difference. There can be situations when the life force will be displaced from the base energy center and even generalized or presence experienced in other parts of the bodies without holding the breath, simply for internal application of pressurizing prana.

That is different from the situation of jada samadhi, this can be experienced anytime the bodies have had time to become relatively polluted to where the ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen is compromised. It results in a corrupt kundalini manifestation because the life force will make a run for the predominant carbon dioxide.

In both observation and perception, jada samadhi is also distinct, it will be darker and produce less subtle manifestations, an exceptional headache (heady dull sensation) can be associated with it when kundalini haphazardly raises to the headspace.

Dean's Comment: Not to just agree with Michael for the sake of being agreeable.  Practice, Practice, Practice is everything. Over the last 11 years that I have been doing the pranayama breath infusion. I have experience jada samadhi more than a handful of times. But with continued persistence, you become aware over time that your lungs are absorbing more fresh air but you may not be aware of the moment that begins to happen. My advice is although you may get knockdown you still have to continue to get up and take it one day at a time.
