Scattering/Convergence Control in Yoga Practice

Vikshepa is the scattering of the sensual energy. This is to be controlled when doing meditation, with the proficiency gained being transferred into common activities, even when not meditating.

The problem is that this technique is unknown. It is listed in yoga manuals but only as a notation, where students have no idea of its importance and are not introduced to its practice.

The three high end practices of yoga are

  • dharana deliberate focus
  • dhyana spontaneous focus
  • samadhi continuous spontaneous focus

These when considered as a sequential practice are termed as samyama, the complete control of the mento-emotional energy. The problem with this achievement is that it is unnatural. As it is, as the psyche was designed, it came into being with spontaneous operations. Many of these are out of reach of the coreSelf, who cannot control these, and may not be in an existential niche to observe them.

The operations take place on impulse. Many of them happen with such rapidity that the coreSelf has no experience of their movements. It takes special training in meditation to increase the observation rate of the core, such that it can see these movements in slow motion.

Then once that is achieved, one has to be directed by a great yoga master, in how to gain control of the system. Consider waking in a jet aircraft, but with no idea of how to pilot the machine. If you are in such a situation with no communication with an experienced pilot, what is the likelihood that one can gain control so as to glide it to land safely at an airport?

I discussed this issue with Yogeshwarananda on August 20, 2024. My conclusion is that if one has to master these supersubtle techniques in yoga, it is hardly likely that the average ascetic will achieve success.

The convergence energy operates continuously in the psyche but the most motivational use of it is for sexual participation. I determined that in the human species and in the others as well, the sexual participation is essential. It presses everyone on all sides. There is a dispersing (vikshepa) energy which comes from the psyche and radiated into the environment. This is a searching capturing energy. Its coding for action is to arrest sensual targets, especially the sexual availabilities.

As soon as it gets a hint that a target is in the vicinity, it moves rapidly to arrest the target or to arrest some part of the target, such as the odor, flavor, color, surface, and sound of the target. This begins with dispersal (scattering) of sensual energy. Once the contact is made with a target there is a change where the same energy converges toward the object with intention of arresting, and then consuming, features of the target. This is a sensual operation.

Yogeshwarananda is of the opinion that one should study this process and know its operation in the psyche is detail. One must arrest this process and use this same procedure to develop a process to penetrate the chit akash sky of consciousness and to develop the divine eye.

It should be understood that the same psychic equipment which operates this dispersing and converging system is itself the one which would operate the divine eye.

One should send out the rays of energy, do the dispersal, to the space between the eyebrows or alternately to the space where there is a spontaneous partial or full opening of the divine eye. Then one should do the convergence of the rays and hold it there in stability.

Question: Seems me that the only way to reach this stage of practice is through several years of pratyahara practice, is that correct?

      • This practice cannot be done if one has not completed pratyahar sensual energy close-down. And that practice takes years to complete.

Some student get the hair-brained idea that they can master these practices in a jiffy but it is like the growth of the body, from the infant stage.

Suppose a child hears that he should grow himself/herself to become an adult. Can he/she do that in two years. We notice that no matter how much a child stuffs still the body only grows at a certain rate whereby it takes years for it to reach adult stage.

The effort to eat healthy food must be made, but that does not change the rate of growth which is already preset by Nature's biology.

        • well written article, only samyama or 3 higher stages can catch that level of subtleness, lower stages of yoga cannot catch that high frequency thoughts.
