The reproductive impulse emerged originally from the sense of taste. It came out of that. Thus it has to be reabsorbed into that. Third eye is involved with the sense of sight (vision).

 

There might be an intuition that says that one should retract everything into the third eye, the sense of vision, but that is because the root of the senses is the kundalini which is linked into the buddhi intellect orb or the imagination-creation faculty. So what happens is that each of the senses are monitored by the imagination faculty which is also used for reasoning. But that faculty uses the sense of sight (third eye) as its primary outlet in the human form. In other species for instance that of a dog, it may use the sense of smell as its primary outlet. A dog if it could talk might argue that its third eye is in the sense of smell.

 

Because the sense of sight is for us the primary outlet of the imagination faculty, it seems intuitive to retract every sense into that but practically speaking this will not work.

The imagination faculty is described as the sixth (6th) detection device in a verse in Bhagavad Gita which list it as manas which is usually translated as the mind but which in this case is the intellect or buddhi in Sanskrit. That means there are five senses and then there is the one sense-monitor which is the sixth detection device which is the imagination faculty. Here is the verse:

 

ममैवांशो जीवलोके

जीवभूतः सनातनः ।

मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि

प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति ॥१५.७॥

 

mamaivāṁśo jīvaloke

jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ

manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi

prakṛtisthāni karṣati (15.7)

 

mamaivāṁśa = mama — my + eva — indeed + aṁśa — partner; jīvaloke = jīva — individualized conditioned being + loke — in the world; jīvabhūta individual soul; sanātana— eternal; mana — mind; aṣṭhānindriyāṇi = saṣṭhāni — sixth + indriyāṇi — sense, detection device; praktisthāni — mundane; karati — draws

 

My partner is in this world of individualized conditioned beings. He is an eternal individual soul but he draws to himself the mundane senses of which the mind is the sixth detection device. (15.7)

 

 

I am confident that if you meditate on the reproduction faculty in your psyche, subtle body, and even in your physical system, you will find that if you try to pull it up against gravity, up through the body, when it reaches the esophagus, it will begin to shrink and will go no higher. Try this and see. Patanjali suggest that according to our interest, we may apply samyama which is the three higher stages of yoga as one sequential practice. Here are related verses:

 

नाभिचक्रे कायव्यूहज्ञानम्॥३०॥

 

nābhicakre kāyavyūhajñānam

 

nābhi – navel; cakre – on the energy gyrating center; kāya – body; vyūha – arrangement, lay out; jñānam – knowledge.

 

By complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy in relation to the focusing on the navel energy-gyrating center, the yogi gets knowledge about the layout of his body. (Yoga Sutras 3.30)

 

कण्ठकूपे क्षुत्पिपासानिवृत्तिः॥३१॥

 

kaṇṭhakūpe kṣutpipāsā nivṛttiḥ

 

kaṇṭha – throat; kūpe – on the gullet; kṣut – hunger; pipāsā – thirst; nivṛttiḥ – cessation, suppression.

 

By the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy in focusing on the gullet, a yogi causes the suppression of hunger and thirst. (Yoga Sutras 3.31)
