Mood Swings

In February 2023, during a meditation session, thoughts surfaced about some events and the associated resentment energies that were present in my psyche. I pondered about the origin of it. What was the initial cause of this, why does it dominate the psyche in this way and how can I rid the psyche of it?

Then some other thoughts surfaced which said that I “should not take these situations personally. Instead, I should see it as mere energy in the psyche that should be removed and replaced with higher energy. Do not personalize it, reduce it to its worth. Remember the Brahma Yoga Bhagavad Gita. What is the essence of it?”

Then, there were sexual thoughts being exchanged between my intellect and another person. I questioned why there was such an interest in this person, knowing that the brief moments of fulfillment with this individual will result in more responsibility, and eventually backfire. Then I thought that I should “not view this as my personal attraction or interest in the individual. After all, how do I know for certain that this is my personal interest, and not some remote energy that is influencing the psyche? Disassociate yourself from it and view it as a foreign energy, not as your personal interest.”

OfCourse this is easier said than done. Many times, in my case, when my psyche becomes saturated with a certain influence/energy. I may act, think, and perceive situations based on that energy. The perception in those moments persists until its influence dissipates or is replaced with a different energy.

Nevertheless, nowadays I try to view these conflicts and so-called interests in the psyche as either energy that facilitates a certain mood and/or mood that facilitates a certain perception and interest. The goal is to adopt this as the default perspective in the psyche. In fact, Sri Krishna spoke of this in the Bhagavad Gita. I am just now understanding a minute aspect of what he taught Arjuna. Please see an associated verse below:

Excerpt taken from Bhagavad Gita by Michael Beloved:

सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति

गुणाः प्रकृतिसंभवाः ।

निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो

देहे देहिनमव्ययम् ॥१४.५॥

sattvaṁ rajastama iti

guṇāḥ prakṛtisaṁbhavāḥ

nibadhnanti mahābāho

dehe dehinamavyayam (14.5)

sattvaṁ — clarity; rajaḥ — impulsion; tama — retardation; iti — thus; guṇāḥ — influences; prakṛtisaṁbhavāḥ = prakṛti— material nature + saṁbhavāḥ — produced of; nibadhnanti — they captivate; mahābāho — O great-armed hero; dehe — in the body; dehinaṁ — embodied soul; avyayam — Imperishable

Clarity, impulsion and retardation are the influences produced of material nature. They captivate the imperishable embodied soul in the body, O strong-armed hero. (14.5)

    • Thanks for sharing. Thoughts in the psyche during meditation is normal as you develop your practice, especially if you are meditating during normal waking hours since you will have to deal with the incoming thoughts from others. To reduce this occurrence, make sure to practice aggressively, and be internally focused with increased attentiveness. You should not sit to meditate until you feel that you have saturated the subtle body with fresh energy—tiring the physical body with the breath infusion and postures should help to accomplish this. Generally, the thoughts will also arise during pranayama practice—I find that increasing the aggression with the breathing and deliberately focusing on blasting these thoughts with fresh energy helps to lift me to higher states that remain when I sit to meditate. Also, do not associate with these thoughts—be unattached and do your best to not mix with them—Madhva’s instruction to retreat to the back of the head works for me. Keep up the good work!

      • Thank you for the pointers. Confronting the psyche can be both challenging and daunting. So I appreciate the advice.

Emphasizing this paragraph, the rest of the advise is equally sound and helpful.

However, this demands due attention during the breath infusion, which especially in this context is a prelude (or sort of part 1/2) to the meditation.

        • You’re welcome bro. Just keep at it…be confident that you’ll gain the upper hand over time and you will with steady practice.
