Breath infusion / Pranayama Indoors: Danger?

Breath infusion indoors may further aggravate lung problems like bronchitis/asthma/TB/common cold because breath infusion may cause the body to take in more virus/bacteria in the stagnant air in the house.

Animals in the house may produce such bacteria which may not affect the animals but will affect a human body. Animals have hairs which may hosts and cause reproduction of bacterial. One may consider getting rid of animals and also getting rid of all carpets or having carpets steam cleaned regularly to kills molds, fungus and mites.

Carpets host dust and dust mites, plus fungus and bacteria which reproduce and are released into the air which we breathe. It is dangerous to do breath infusion in carpet lined room or in rooms which have rugs which are not regularly steam cleaned or bacteria-treated in some way. In addition in hotels the rugs are terrible because they are superficially cleaned if they are cleaned at all. Carpets also release chemicals as the fibers of the fabric age. The released volatile chemicals become concentrated if the room is closed and has no direct continuous window/door air flow.

When the ducts, air passages and filters are infested with molds, Air conditioned air may be harmful for breathing during breath infusion. Dusty or rarely washed comforters and mattresses may be harmful for breathing during breath infusion.

If one cannot get rid of the animals, at least let them be outside the house in outdoor pens for living with little or no access to the house. As the body gets older it will less and less be able to deal with things which when it was young, it could safely handle.

Michaela Turner, MA Thank you for this, Michael Beloved. In the past, when I participated in Art of Living Sudarshan Kriya Yoga in a carpeted room, with only one window slightly cracked for fresh air, I found that I felt much worse. The leader would not honor my request to open more windows. I stopped going. Thank you again for your article. It explained a lot. (PS I do miss the powerful group breath work.)

Dr. Shelley Leutschaft This make sense, although I live in farm country and there are many molds outdoors.

      • Michael Beloved

Michael Beloved Dr. Dr. Shelley Leutschaft,
Molds outdoors and dormant viruses floating about or coming from northern regions and coming alive in warmer chimes is a problem. The problem is that it is difficult to see, hear or touch pathogens. They are usually realized after one is infected as for instance when one realizes that one has a flu or the body exhibits allergies after a session of breath infusion outdoors.

But the solution is not to run indoors unless that environment is clean of the same or other disease causes. I recommend that in freezing weather, one should practice in a room which has limited outdoor air access with a heater in the room running through the session. The window should be opened as wide as necessary. In freezing temperature the air is so compressed that sometimes even a pin crack will provide enough compressed cold air which will expand once it enters the room which is heated.

      • Michael Beloved

Michael Beloved In a tropical climate if one senses that the outdoors have infectious bugs, one may skip practice on the days when one feels that one would inhale the pathogens when doing kapalabhati/bhastrika pranayama because during those sessions, one may absorb one hundred times (100 X) more air than would be from normal involuntary breathing which means that many more times of the pathogens.

There is no room for superstition feeling that because it is yoga or because it is pranayama it cannot be harmful.

Only that which you allow to affect you will. It is probably not ideal to breathe in anything negative, but if you keep positive and have a strong intention then really almost nothing can harm you, or your health. It is mind over matter. We are made in God's image and can do a lot more than we think, If we want to. It is the reason people began blessing food and drink, as doing so can change it's frequency and make it better or no longer having a negative impact to you, or at least as much. A good thing to consider in a world full of pesticides and gmos ;) with that said we should try to limit as much negative resistance to ourselves as possible in order to more easily obtain the results we want and have our biomechanics tuned up. But also, if you are a spiritual person and practice these things, then I don't see why you already wouldn't consider yourself to be greater and more powerful than that. I have lived places with the black plague running rampant and am fine. I am never sick. However, my methods are not typical.

I just wanted to remind people that intention is the most powerful energy in the universe, and if you can erase fear and doubt then nothing can hold you back. Don't let the small things get in your way.

Erinn Earth ~ (devaPriya Yogini) Excellent post Michael Beloved. Due to your specific teachings, I learned to take my asana/pranayama practice outside and its been one of the most important changes I made to my spiritual life. Mind over matter only goes so far when it comes down to the real science of yoga, this isn't new age philosophy we are working with here. The fresh air that the Goddess has provided for our practice is not to be dismissed as optional. It is essential. Without fresh air, the whole yoga program is dangerously compromised and could go in a dark direction without intention. Considering what i'll call, 'traditional environmental hygiene' in India its no wonder yogis went up into the mountains to get a little fresh air for liberation sake!

        • Sherron Varela

Sherron Varela This discussion is very interesting. I have noticed a difference in the air quality in my apartment lately, with the heat on, more dust - I definitely feel it more while practicing. In the process of cleaning. Unfortunately for me, practicing outside is not an option.

        • Michael Beloved

          Michael Beloved Sherron Varela,
By all means one should try to live in a place where there is access to being outside the practice when the weather if favorable, either a balcony or back yard. But there is such a think as fated circumstance. And that changes from time to time, so that if one gets ideal living circumstance, one would appreciate it even more once one leaves one that is unfavorable.
          Good luck!

dr sukhraj dhillon Very interesting and informative discussion. We can't ignore the importance of breathing fresh air. I have backyard with trees and grass and also keep windows partially open. I keep heating to the minimum. But to continue breathing exercises is very important to correct poor breathing habits. Poor breathing is to low energy as bad air filter is to low car performance. http://amzn.to/h14DD2 https://goo.gl/7Okr1q

Tommy Duclos Pets like dogs and cats are second density souls. Kicking them to the curb could have serious negative karma backlash. Full disclosure, I have two dogs, and to kick them out of the house due to lazy owner hygiene sounds cruel and ignorant. Yes throw away a nasty carpet. But a helpless loving family pet? Shame on you for suggesting this. Mr. Beloved, don't forget we are all one in this universe. "Get rid of animals " Please. Get off your high ego of a pedestal.

This would be ideal in big polluted countries but not in practice !

          Michael Beloved Tommy Duclos,
Pets like dogs and cats are second density souls.

I beg to disagree. Pets like dogs and cats are same density souls with same potential opportunities as humans. Atma is basically the same whereby humans and animals have difference mainly in the casing and not in the spiritual contents. Pets are same density souls. In this usage soul means the subtle body actually because it is the subtle body of the atma (core self) which moves from physical form to physical form (transmigration) and which adapts to the type of form it is attracted to on the basis of its developed habits.

Kicking anyone to the curb, human or animal could have serious negative karmic backlash but where does that end? How far should that go?
Have you read Bhagavad Gita which is one of the major text on yoga, where Krishna told Arjuna to face relatives in battle and which resulted in the deaths of many of those relatives.
Was Krishna a crazy loon who did not understand the consequential laws of transmigration?

What about Buddha, Mr. Duclos, he left aside his wife and young son, his parents, his government responsibilities to isolate himself to find enlightenment.
Were they of less value than pets?
              Was he cruel and ignorant?

            • Maria Moscato

Maria Moscato Hello! I am new to the discussion. I am an artist and yoga practitioner. I am currently doing the teacher training to be a Kundalini yoga teacher so have been reading a lot on the subject of the different layers to our being. I definitely agree deep breathing exercises are healthier outdoors in a non-polluted area-obviously not sitting out on one's terrace in the city center and breathing in combustion,
I would like more information on the souls of animals. I have two cats and am a lover of all creatures. I have heard that animals strive in this life to be humans in the next. While humans strive to be angels in the next life. Can I have some feedback please?

            • Michael Beloved

              Michael Beloved Maria Moscato,
I would like more information on the souls of animals. I have two cats and am a lover of all creatures.

              Try to see this:
animal = bare self + mental faculties + emotional faculties +body type

in Sanskrit the approximate terms are:

              bhuta = atma + buddhi + kundalini/indriyas + sharira

The basic difference between one species and another is the body type, which causes one species to have particular advantages in particular environments.

If the bare self (atma) is person (purusha), then the animal is a person, which bring the question of why it is limited if it is the equivalent of a person.

            • Michael Beloved

Michael Beloved First of all we began with the assumption that the human only is the person. If we abandon that definition, and accept that the body type either suppresses or expresses the person, we could understand that due to the particular body type, the person in the cat body is suppressed because that body limits its expression, while the person in the human body is expressed because that type of body facilitates personality display.

            • Michael Beloved

Michael Beloved I have heard that animals strive in this life to be humans in the next.
Maybe not every animal but the so called domesticated animals because of proximity to human lifestyle and also because of rendering service to humans, develop the need to be in human bodies and make inroads into human wombs through their service to human beings as draught animals and as pets.

The so called wild animals which are leading predators, ones like lion and eagle develop the desire because they are always planning to be in the top position as exploiters of everything else, just as the humans are expert at doing.

            • Michael Beloved

Michael Beloved While humans strive to be angels in the next life. Can I have some feedback please?

Humans, some humans, strive to be in some types of heavenly life which is free of negative traumas. Thus they adopt morality (dharma), affection (bhakti), austerity (tapa) and philosophy (vada). The cultivation of these qualities is supposed to qualify one to go to a higher place (loka).
