Yoga May Cause Injury

It does happen even while doing asana that some students do damage to the spine or to other parts of the body. Each student should have some limiter whereby certain stretches are only taken so far and no more, because otherwise things will go haywire.

The spine is super important in yoga and if it is damaged, then it affects the practice in a negative way. Hence during practice we have to be sure that we are not going to do a posture in a way which will cause injury.

Final poses or ideal poses like those seen in books by gurujis like Iyengar and Vishnudevananda should not be done by everyone because it depends on the type of body one has from which parents who had what sorts of genes. It also depends on what age of body one began to do the postures.

In some class sessions one is encouraged to super stretch or to push beyond reasonable limits but that is wrong because while one body type might do a certain posture easily, another body type might never master the final form of that particular posture even though it might perfect some other posture in the nick of time.

Finally, pay attention within the body to know what is happening in it during a pose, because if one does not notice that a stretch is doing damage, one will however feel the pain of it during or after, even days after the posture was done. If you have to close your eyes while doing postures and focus within to know what is happening in your body.
