Upward Meditation Focus

On July 13, 2025, Yogananda appeared during the early morning meditation session. His interest was my divine-eye opening research. Currently, I practice to discover a reliable method for opening the divine eye. I tried many procedures given by various teachers of the past. Some of these work for a time. Some work for a moment or two. Some are not effective at any rate.

Methods which work partially are good. However, they are useless for beginners and for persons who are not used to subjective perception. In addition, sporadic methods may not be recognized because the opening of the divine eye may not be obvious. In fact, the yogi may not know that the eye is open, even.

If someone looks through a transparent window on a dark moon night, it will be just as if he did not peer out. Due to a lack of contrast, that perception would seem as if there was no window present.

This ignorance results in a lack of confidence of a method, where eventually, due to impatience, the yogi will cease to practice it. That is due to not getting an obvious result from the method. An increase which is incremental, which is barely perceived, is hard to rate or appreciate. It may seem to be nothing even.

Little by little by little, meditation efforts add up but that is over a long period of time. Hence if the yogi abandons the practice early on, it is likely that he will never realize an obvious result.

Somehow, Yogananda got information about my research efforts. He came to explain the method he was introduced to by Yogeshwar, his kriya guru. Here is the explanation.

Use a method for infusing prana into the subtle body. That method can be bhastrika. Once there is sufficient infusion, sit to meditate. Note that the need for subtle energizing air is reduced. This is indicated by the slower rate of breathing, where the subtle body has very little anxiety about acquiring subtle energy through the breathing process. This is the vritti activity check. If the mind is hasty, doing thinking and imaging, it will be anxious for breath, either for acquiring subtle energy or for flickering energy. It will be extrovert. Some method must be used to cease that.

Once the mind is quiet, being non-anxious, look upwards slightly without being distracted to anything which is outside the body. The yogi may use a blindfold. The eyelids may be closed, partially closed or open. The attention should be within the psyche and not in touch with physical things which are external to the physical body.

While looking upwards slightly, focus on the bunches of light which you see. These are subjective. These are inside lights. Keep the focus there but it should be a mild focus. Now and again if the focus drops, lift it again. Quietly and slowly, lift it if it lowers itself. Whatever subjective light, of whatever color appears, the yogi should be focused on it. He should practice this daily. From this the divine eye may operate.

Eventually there will be perception through the divine eye. There are many types of transcendental visions which happen there. They are too numerous to mention.
