Atmavijnana has many formats and approaches. It concerns direct experience (vijnana) in contemplation on the coreSelf (atma). The objective is to glean information about the coreSelf through observation in meditation where the interest/inquiry/observational power of the coreSelf uses the core as the object of research. The core is the subject and the object, the observer and the target simultaneously.

On March 7, 2020, Yogeshwarananda introduced two preliminary aspects.

  • absorption on the light of the coreSelf (atmajyoti)
  • absorption of the feelings which are the coreSelf (atmabhava)

In both the light itself as well as the feelings are aspects of the coreSelf. That is none other than the self. Due to the habit of connecting with everything other than itself, turning the inquiry towards the self requires some psychological effort.

In the absorption of the feelings there may be a lack of excitement and little or no register if the feelings are neutral. In the observation of the light of the self as it illuminates the very self, there may be subtlety which causes a lack of contrast and a resulting conclusion that there is no light from the self.

The meditator should patiently persist, day after day, week after week, year after year until the selfLight and selfFeelings are objectified.
