Past Life Flash or Comprehensive Insight
When doing meditation and even at other times, a yogi may develop sudden, abrupt flash or comprehensive insight. There is this idea which I am repeated challenged by which is that a yogi should get this insight on demand. This means that if a yogi should rapidly find out about his own or someone’s past life as desired.
This idea is against genuine yoga practice. It occurs because of thinking that yoga is a whimsical or deliberate mysticism, where the yogi, if he is to be recognized as being advanced, should tell others about past lives upon requests.
Flash insight is when a yogi sees one or two scenes from his or someone else’s past life. In such a flash there is no integration into the past life. The yogi is left to interpret what the flash means. This is similar to like when one trudges through a jungle on a dark moon night. Then suddenly there is a flash of lightning. In the distance, one sees that one is being stalked by a jaguar. Even though the vision lasted for a few split seconds, it is valid enough so that one can draw the proper conclusion about the big cat. One may act to save one’s life.
Sometimes the flash lingers in the mind, like when one sees a bright light in darkness and that light remains as a vibrant recorded image in the brain. One can study this even after the bright flash occurred.

Comprehensive insight is when one sees a large segment of what happened in a past life, In the experience, one participates as the social character one was in that past life and relives what actually happened. This is similar to the modern 3D movies, where one gets the feeling that one is in the movie and that everything is present as physical reality. In such a past life experience, one comes away with vivid memory of what happened. However there might not be clarity as to who one was or as to the date of the past life experience. This is because in such experiences one does not see one’s face even though one sees everything else. One fails to see one’s face because one gets the experiences as one looks through the face one used in the former life. There is no indication of the date of the experience from the past life, but one gets indication according to the language used, and the attire worn by the people at the time.

Over the years, writing about past life experiences, I found that I was repeated assaulted by curious people who wanted to know about their own past lives. They expected that I would tell them of their past on request. If I did not do so they were offended. Some of them used my refusal to cite that I was a fake yogi.
This type of demand by others occurs because of a misunderstanding where people feel that a yogi should be like a paid fortune teller or astrologer who must do as the client demands. However yoga insight into past lives have nothing to do with this. It does not occur on demand or by desire of anyone, including the yogi.
Past life flashes occur by the grace of yoga practice, so that as one practices, it will occur according to the progress attained. It does not occur on the basis of wanting it to happen or being curious about one’s or anyone else’s past. As one practice, now and then there will be a flash or compressive experience of a past life. It may happen in reference to others whom the yogi meets in the course or life or in reference to others who do not have physical bodies at present but whom the yogi may meet on the astral planes.
The hitch of it is that a yogi does not necessarily get permission from fate to inform someone of that person’s past life. It is not that in every case of a valid insight into someone or his own past life, does a yogi have the permission of fate to divulge that information to others. However some people are against this attitude of fate and demand that a yogi should reveal everything he knows about his own or someone’s past life. But a yogi if he is genuine will be more afraid of offending providence than offending curious people who are or are not yoga students.
With each insight about a past life, the yogi gets an energy of restraint so that he knows intuitively that he should or should not divulge the information to someone else or that he should only divulge part of it and no more. Thus when others pressure a yogi to reveal everything, the yogi has to avoid such people because they are pushing him against fate, which is the absolute authority.
There are past life experiences which flash in the mind of a yogi about someone else or about himself in relation to someone else and with the flash there is a restraining energy which stipulates that the yogi is not to divulge the information to the other person.

Recently in the month of August, I was with some persons when suddenly my consciousness was in a state of insight for a time, for about 5 minutes. I was in two worlds at the same time with subjective and objective awareness happening simultaneously.
The experience was such that one person of the group, was experienced walking with me in China. I was a Taoist teacher. It was around the year 1200 according to the Western calendar. The person walking with me then in China, was present before me physically but does not use a Chinese body at this time.
As soon as this happened, it shifted so that the China experience was interspaced into the physical body experience from this time. At the time there was conveyed to me objectively, this person’s attitude from the past life, where he was at the same level of advancement which he is at presently. He was interested in the Taoist spiritual process but not deep enough to commit himself to serious practice.
I realized then and there that he make no progress. His mental approach towards life remained the same.
When this experience was over, the feeling of it lingered like when one eats a flavorful food the taste of which lingers in the mouth long after the food was moved into the stomach. I began to question myself like this:
How many lives does it take before someone becomes serious?
Why are tendencies so deep rooted, such that even in many lives, a person does not make substantial progress and continues at a slow rate or even digresses?
