Memory Release / Yoga

Memory is one of the five chittavritti mento-emotional involuntary operations which are listed by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, as something which is unwanted during practice. The study of memory is generally neglected. For meditation people usually focus more on their stress subjects and on detaching from their trauma fatigues in the mind.

 

However memory is related as it supports the stress and trauma operations. Memory operates voluntarily and involuntarily, as for example when one desires to recall an incidence and remembers it instantly or when one has no desire to recall another incidence but remembers it involuntarily because the mechanism which recovers and illustrates the incidence operates even though one does not desire that recall.

 

What about deliberate recall which just does not function, like when one saw an incidence, and then one second after tries to recall it, but cannot. Or like when one is in an experience and needs to recall a similar or related incidence but finds that the effort at recall fails to produce the previous incidence.

 

Is the psyche a scattered oneness in which everything and anything is randomly situated?

To put it bluntly, is the psyche a chaos?

Is it an organized or disorganized oneness?

 

Are the memories located in a specific psychological niche, in some organized way like files in a drawer or images on a computer hard drive?

 

Have you ever wondered why even though you expressly wanted to remember it and it was the reason for which you went that distance to the store, you did not recall that special item which you wanted to purchase?

 

Patanjali wanted that the memory be shut down (nirodhah) during yoga practice.

 

Does that mean that all memory should be terminated?
