Long Life in Yoga Practice
Living a long life is no indication that someone is an advanced yogi. If permitted by fate, some animal species like that of turtles, would live up to five hundred years. There are trees in California, USA which have growth rings indicating a life of over five thousand years. This means that these trees were there before the time of Jesus Christ.
The question about a long life is:
Does the entity living in such a body make more spiritual advancement as each year proceeds?
For sure, we know that the trees are not making spiritual advancement by fulfilling such long lives. This is because they do not have the means to assess their situation and contrast it in terms of subtle and physical existence.
A human being is different. Jesus Christ lives 30+ years but from day one he was spiritual advanced. His life was ram packed with spiritual purport. Most of us live without such spiritual impetus and expression.
What is the focus of a person who lived a long life? For instance some of my ancestors lived beyond eighty or ninety years of age and died peacefully at home in bodies which were not terribly diseased. And yet, I cannot say that these persons were spiritually advance or that they were interested in anything besides social existence in terms of the status of the family. They were totally absorbed with the family which means that after death, they continued with that interest and would by now assumed infant bodies in the family. This is not spiritual interest.

The more important thing to consider however; is that a long life is caused not by the core-self but by the kundalini psychic lifeforce. The core-self does not create the body in the womb of the mother. It is the kundalini which is the architect of the body. It is the kundalini which maintains the health of the body. The core-self for its part is careless and carefree in bodily maintenance. Especially in youth the core-self is absent as maintainer of the health of the body. Instead it concerns itself with the pleasure in the body.
The kundalini does want the body to live a long life and while doing so it wants the body to generate other bodies which would be its lifeline back into the material world once the body dies. Kundalini instinctively knows that the body will die, and thus it invest in descendants so that it can get back into the physical world again.
Once it gets a new body the kundalini desires that this new form should last as long as possible to the fag end of its life. Then the kundalini hops to its descendant and generates an embryo so that it can again live another long life.
The body is born with a certain maximum number of years for life. Mostly we cannot increase this. We can only decrease this number. When that maximum is exhausted in one way or the other the body dies. The impetus energy for its existence becomes exhausted. The main reason for living is to experience aspects of the physical world. We live just to experience whatever happens while we use a body which can sensually appreciate the environment.
To answer the question as to why we get to live, we need to ask the kundalini because that lifeforce is the main reason for us having the opportunity for physical life. We rid piggy-back on the life force and try to make up a valid reason for living but the reason is not the cause of life.
The mother goes to buy rice at the market but she takes her infant along. He is strapped to her side in a cloth loop. As she pays for the rice, the infant grabs a candy secretly. This is exactly how we are positioned with the kundalini life force, where it has its agenda and we as core-self have our desires. But in the final analysis as the infant is based on the mother so the core-self is reliant on the kundalini.
