Humility or Sexual Indulgence

A sannyasi monk, whom I knew before he departed his physical body, came to speak with me recently. This happened because I am currently in the area of his physical residence when he used the last body. I am also seeing some persons who were his disciples.

He said this to me:

I came to ruin because of a lack of humility. It seems to me now in retrospect that sexual indulgence is not as corrosive to a monk as a lack of humility. I feel that I came to ruin because of being arrogant and not realizing that I was.

Once you are in an institution, you take certain protections for granted but material nature does not care about those institutional slogans. It attacks anyway. I felt that once I was not involved in sex, I would be protected and there would be no other cause for ruin. I know now that this is the wrong idea.

It does not matter how a ship is scuttled. Supposed a large wave takes it down. That is like a monk having sex. Or support it runs against a reef and goes down. That is like when he is arrogant and overconfident. Or suppose there is an explosion in the engine room. That is like when people discover that he uses criminal means to raise money for his society. In all such cases every different cause is a danger, not just one. Hence one has to be vigilant on every front. But I feel that reputation, the hunger for it, is the main problem once sex is out of the way.
