Evacuation / Meditation

One discovery I made recently which confirms something that has come up repeatedly during practice and which I hesitated to declare before, is the fact that the evacuation process affects meditation.

This might seem crazy since what does the mind have to do with evacuation and if the atma self is transcendental then what does it have to do with the evacuation process of the material body.

The hype about the transcendental nature of the self is only worth so much because when all is said and done it has to deal with the physical reality. And despite the fact that many people propose that the self has nothing to do with material nature, that declaration may apply without adjustment to the atmas which are out of material nature completely. For those which are in it, is a declaration only, without any substance behind it.

This is similar to the constitution of the developed countries, where it is stated that all men are equal and people take this very seriously as a mental construct, even though physically there is no such reality.

Two babies are born at about the same moment, one has autism and one doesn’t. Then people say that they are equal. What does that mean?

But then a transcendentalist comes from India, or from Los Angeles and says that since the atma is spiritual, the material condition of the bodies of those two babies does not mean anything. The autism is an illusion, they explain. The real fact is the atma self which is transcendental and which is God.

They then begin to explain to the autistic child as she grows up that her condition is imaginary. They say that it is an illusion and that she should be her real self and abandon her ego self which identifies with the condition of her material body, which itself is just a mental aberration which she constructed because she is God in fact.

Okay!

Enough of this! Get to the point.

The point is that evacuation of the body if it is not prompt causes meditation to occur on a lower level. The elevated condition of the atma self is affected by the condition of its individual material body with stress on the word individual. If Yogi A has prompt evacuation, her meditation will be on a higher plane than usual, as contrasted to Yogi B who does not have prompt evacuation? Yogi B will have meditation on a lower level if his evacuation is slow.

So what is this suggesting?

It is suggesting that the atman self has to give energy for the operation of the physical body. This is not a direct investment. It is more like a subtle tax which the citizen does not realize is being taken out of his wages.

Once around the year of 1976, I worked at Marvin Windows in Warroad, Minnesota. Why on earth I was there in the ice of the world, only heaven knows. In any case it was an interesting place because the Marvin family which owned the large window company also owned much more in the town. They paid just about minimum wage and was the employment hub of the whole area for miles around.

The thing was that we were all taxed not just by the State of Minnesota and by the Federal Government but by the Marvins themselves. Here is how it worked. If you bought food at a grocery, and you had to, then the Marvins had investments there so they took back part of your wages in the form of profits. If you wanted a piece of lumber, then the Marvins were stretching their hands there because they owned the main lumber yard. For that matter whatever you did you had to pay the Marvins in effect giving back to them the very paltry salary which they gave you. They controlled every railway cart which came through the area, because their hand was in that too. Whatever item came into town, they had their hands stretched to receive a piece of it too.

The atma self is transcendental. I am sure about that. I will sign my name to the document that says that. However to go a step further I want to read the details. Is the energy of the atma being used by material nature in any way? Before I sign off to the transcendence of the atma I need to have this explained or I won’t buy into the fancy doctrines which wish to award the atma legendary powers of detachment in referent to nature which it simply does not have or which it has to endeavor to attain or even meditate to attain.

How about statements from the Bhagavad Gita (my English translation):

=============

ममैवांशो जीवलोके

जीवभूतः सनातनः ।

मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि

प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति ॥१५.७॥

mamaivāśo jīvaloke

jīvabhūta sanātana

manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāi

praktisthāni karati (15.7)

mamaivāśa = mama — my + eva — indeed + aśa — partner; jīvaloke = jīva — individualized conditioned being + loke — in the world; jīvabhūta — individual soul; sanātana — eternal; mana — mind; aṣṭhānindriyāi = saṣṭhāni — sixth + indriyāi — sense, detection device; praktisthāni — mundane; karati — draws

My partner is in this world of individualized conditioned beings. He is an eternal individual soul but he draws to himself the mundane senses of which the mind is the sixth detection device. (15.7)

शरीरं यदवाप्नोति

यच्चाप्युत्क्रामतीश्वरः ।

गृहीत्वैतानि संयाति

śarīra yadavāpnoti

yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvara

ghītvaitāni sayāti

vāyurgandhānivāśayāt (15.8)

śarīra — by body; yad — which; avāpnoti — he acquires; yat — which; cāpi — and also; utkrāmatīśvara = utkrāmati — departs from + īśvara — master; ghītvaitāni = ghītvā — taking + etāni — these; sayāti — he goes; vāyu — wind; gandhān — perfumes; ivāśayāt = ivā — just as + āśayāt— from source

Regardless of whichever body that master acquires, or whichever one he departs from, he goes taking these senses along, just as the wind goes with the perfumes from their source. (15.8)

श्रोत्रं चक्षुः स्पर्शनं च

रसनं घ्राणमेव च ।

अधिष्ठाय मनश्चायं

विषयानुपसेवते ॥१५.९॥

śrotra caku sparśana ca

rāsana ghrāameva ca

adhiṣṭhāya manaścāya

viayānupasevate (15.9)

śrotra —hearing; caku — vision; sparśana — sense of touch; ca — and; rāsana — taste; ghrāa — smell; eva — indeed; ca — and; adhiṣṭhāya — governing; manaścāya = mana — mind + ca — and + aya — this; viayān — attractive objects; upasevate — becomes addicted

While governing the sense of hearing, the vision, the sense of touch, the sense of taste, the sense of smell and the mind, My partner becomes addicted to the attractive objects. (15.9)

उत्क्रामन्तं स्थितं वापि

भुञ्जानं वा गुणान्वितम् ।

विमूढा नानुपश्यन्ति

पश्यन्ति ज्ञानचक्षुषः ॥१५.१०॥

utkrāmanta sthita vāpi

bhuñjāna vā guānvitam

vimūhā nānupaśyanti

paśyanti jñānacakua (15.10)

utkrāmanta — departing; sthita — remaining; vāpi = vā — or + api — also; bhuñjāna — exploiting; vā — or; guānvitam — under the influence of material nature; vimūhā — idiots; nānupaśyanti = na — not + aupaśyanti — they perceived; paśyanti — they perceive; jñānacakua — vision of reality

The idiots do not perceive how the spirit departs or remains or exploits under the influence of material nature. But those who have the vision of reality do perceive this. (15.10)
