This is known by doing advanced meditation where one reaches the causal plane and in there one can see how the subtle universes come into existence and are then de-existed again.

This is also known objectively by pranayama breath infusion, when the subtle body’s frequency is increased, where at a certain point it flashes is no more due to reaching a stage beyond its manifestation potential.

This is also known by doing higher meditation and going back into time to the epoch before this manifested creation, when this material which is called the universe was not in existence, where there was a blankness where this universe currently is located.

These Verses are from Yoga Sutras Chapter 3

Verse 27

भुवनज्ञानं सूर्ये संयमात्॥२७॥

bhuvanajñānaṁ sūrye saṁyamāt

From the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy in relation to the sun god or the sun planet, knowledge of the solar system is gained.

Verse 28

चन्द्रे ताराव्यूहज्ञानम्॥२८॥

candre tārāvyūhajñānam

By complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy, in reference to the moon or moon-god, the yogi gets knowledge about the system of stars.

Verse 30

नाभिचक्रे कायव्यूहज्ञानम्॥३०॥

nābhicakre kāyavyūhajñānam

By complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy in relation to the focusing on the navel energy-gyrating center, the yogi gets knowledge about the layout of his body.

Verse 35

हृदये चित्तसंवित्॥३५॥

hṛdaye cittasaṁvit

By the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy as it is focused on the causal body in the vicinity of the chest, the yogi gets thorough insight into the causes of the mental and emotional energy.

Verse 36

सत्त्वपुरुषयोरत्यन्तासङ्कीर्णयोः प्रत्ययाविशेषो भोगः परार्थत्वात्स्वार्थसंयमात्पुरुषज्ञानम्॥३६॥

sattva puruṣayoḥ atyantāsaṁkīrṇayoḥ

pratyayaḥ aviśeṣaḥ bhogaḥ parārthatvāt

svārthasaṁyamāt puruṣajñānam

Experience results from the inability to distinguish between the individual spirit and the intelligence energy of material nature, even though they are very distinct. By complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy while focusing on self-interest distinct from the other interest, a yogi gets knowledge of the individual spirit.

Verse 44

बहिरकल्पिता वृत्तिर्महाविदेहा ततः प्रकाशावरणक्षयः॥४४॥

bahiḥ akalpitā vṛttiḥ mahāvidehā tataḥ

prakāśa āvaraṇakṣayaḥ

By the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy which is external, which is not formed, a yogi achieves the great bodiless state. From that the great mental darkness which veils the light, is dissipated.

Verse 45

स्थूलस्वरूपसूक्ष्मान्वयार्थवत्त्वसंयमाद्भूतजयः॥४५॥

sthūla svarūpa sūkṣma anvaya arthavatva

saṁyamāt bhūtajayaḥ

By the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy, while linking the attention to the gross forms, real nature, subtle distribution and value of states of matter, a yogi gets conquest over them.

Verse 49

ततो मनोजवित्वं विकरणभावः प्रधानजयश्च॥४९॥

tataḥ manojavitvaṁ vikaraṇabhāvaḥ pradhānajayaḥ ca

Subsequently, there is conquest over the influence of subtle matter and over the parting away or dispersion of the mento-emotional energy, with the required swiftness of mind.

There is no death of Subtle body .. there is transformation. The upper part can detach when it no longer require the lower part of body. For example someone is vibrating at higher dimension, and qualifies completely to remain there, then the lower shells will depart from upper shell. The lower departed shells will still stroll in universe for some time. We got not only multiple bodies but also have different copies of self in different realm. Everyone exists in different space/time all the time, without being aware of existence in different realm.

There are planes beyond the astral planes. There is existence beyond the universe.

The subtle body is not a spiritual form. It is perishable just as everything pertaining to the manifested material world is perishable and this includes the subtle energy in it that becomes manifested to the subtle senses of the subtle body.

The subtle body is as good as the sun and as the sun is not eternal, so is the subtle body.

The spirit lives in the environment of the subtle body, the way the electricity in a battery lives in a cell phone. Because it is transcendental to the subtle body, the spirit will not perish when the subtle body is finished. It will continue existing.

However such existence does not necessarily mean that it will be objectively aware of itself. It may or may not be.

Listen carefully to what I am going to write now, because you have some transcendental experiences and you should be able to follow this.

In the material world (prakriti) there are actually three bodies which a spirit can have. These are the causal body, the subtle body and the material body. As you suggested the subtle body has phases. This is correct. But it is still lower than the form used by a spirit when it is on the causal plane. So what is that causal form? It is an indistinct form which means that from where we are now, it is an indefinite form. It has no distinct end or beginning, no membrane like a skin.

Below that causal body is the subtle body which is actually produced from the influence of the causal form. That subtle body is made of sheer energy but it has a membrane which is like a subtle skin which can in certain phases of the form be completely transparent like the skin of a jelly fish.

There will come a point in the future where all subtle bodies in this solar system will be finished because the energy which forms the environment where the subtle body functions, those dimensions will no longer be manifested due to collapse of the subtle energy (prana). This is the end of the astral world.

That will happen in billions of years, which compared to the 100 or so years of a material body, is an eternity, but it is a finishing point nevertheless.

Now beyond the causal body, there is the bare spirit, with no assistance or support from the prakriti.

So then the spirit gets to know what it really is but only if it can retain objective consciousness. If a particular spirit is in a category where it cannot retain that, then it begins to exist then in what the Upanishads terms as brahman, but it does so and it does not know that has occurred. There it exists in the sat feature with no chit or ananda perception.

In other words, I do not have to know that I exist to exist. I can exist without knowing it. I can be conscious without being objectively aware of it.

This brahman place is sheer spiritual light but not the light like from the sun which is subtle pranic energy. This is another type of light, spiritual light. In fact such light, if you were to go to it and view it, will appear to be darkness because of the inability of the physical and subtle senses to perceive it.

So in that light whatever is there, the spirits, the environments everything is divine, meaning that it is not perishable. It is infallible in respect to time and decay.

In physics there is information about radioactive substances which will survive without breaking down for thousands of years and then these will break down slowly, and we have the sun which has from our view, an unlimited supply of subtle energy, so from that we can surmise the possibility of a divine world where the shelf life of everything is eternal.
