  • Dragonflies! Among my most favorite insects. They always bring me childhood memories in a special way.

They would always hang on the barbwire tips of one side of the house when as an elementary school child we lived in Gao a northern region city of Mali. That is in the desert, very bordering with the actual Sahara desert. I wish I had not been a mischievous little boy harassing them even as I liked them.

Primitive seems really relative, humans may be seen primitive too. The larvae are amazing and no less predatory than big cats, and they don’t have to rely on hunting and ambushing lessons from their elders just their killer instincts.

I never even suspected they were predators much less insectivores. I just assumed they were kind of like flies with similar panoramic prana vision capabilities, and that they would have similar diets. Interesting that flies or bees who have also been around since back when are not mentioned at all.

To me, they are so mesmerizing and magical, and this documentary confirmed that. Great share smile

    • Yes, they are also a favorite with me.

Here's a poem that I wrote about them many years ago:

      Dragonfly

If I’m worthy, when I die,

      Lord, make me a dragonfly.

Across the meadow, I will flit,

Upon the saw grass tassels sit,

      Shimmer in the summer air,

Dart and dive and hover there,

      Seek some sullen stranger’s head

To light upon with angel’s tread,

      Pouting that he’s been forgot

And whisper in his ear he’s not.

And lift his heavy heart away,

Like this one did for me today.
