Yogi who never found a Siddha

By sheer good luck, I was again in the presence of Srila Yogeshwarananda during the afternoon session of exercises. Tobe Terrell who is taking training in breath infusion practice, was absent because of a malfunction in his spine.

The spine is very important to a yogi. Both the spine and brain are of utmost importance. In fact the human body is considered in the Vedic literature to be a special tool which can be used by the spiritual self to attain spiritual perception. Therefore the Brahma Sutras begins with a verse which says athato brahma jijnasa, which is to say that Now (athato ) that you have this human form and can read this book, inquire anxiously (jijnasa) about the spiritual reality (brahma). If I was in an animal form, I could not make the inquiry because the form does not have that facility.

Due to the special construction of the human spine and brain, it permits an entity who is using a material body to pursue spiritual inquiries. In the other bodies which are regarded as lower forms of life in the Vedic literature, such pursuit is not possible because of the limited intellectual and perceptual facilities. The key features of the human body are the brain and spine.

Hence if a yogi’s brain or spine is damaged, he or she will be deterred in practice, at least until the physical body meets its end and the yogi is left with only a subtle body. All precautions should be taken to protect the spine and brain. Even a simply act like sitting should not be done carelessly by a yogi. The spine should be supported even when sitting. A yogi should avoid sitting carelessly without proper back support. Activities like lifting and even doing postures should be done with the awareness that if the spine is damaged, it will have a negative impact on practice.

During the afternoon session Srila Yogeshwaranand again mentioned the postures and breath infusion which have to do with the thighs. He said this,

“Keep the thighs cleared of foul energy and passionate force. That is the key to going with the siddhas. Going with the siddhas means having a subtle body which has a vibrational level which is similar to that of the siddhas. There is a dense astral energy which comes from the lower back part of the subtle body. There is also a passionate force which drops down from the reproductive area. These energies are compiled in the thighs where they are infused into the bone marrow and blood in the thighs. This combined energy influences one’s desires and life style and makes a yogi into a hypocrite. He poses as a yogi but he has sexual interest. He poses as a yogi but he has interest in creature survival. Then when the body dies he never finds even a single siddha to associate with.”

“He loops around again by the natural attraction to sex indulgence, and he comes out again in a mammal body. It could be any mammal not just the human type.”

Dean's question: If by some unfortunate twist of fate a yogi took rebirth in the Ape species, would the yogi's subtle body be able to pursue spiritual inquiries while that physical body lay at sleep at night?

Dean's question: If by some unfortunate twist of fate a yogi took rebirth in the Ape species, would the yogi's subtle body be able to pursue spiritual inquiries while that physical body lay at sleep at night?

MiBeloved’s Response:

That would depend on the residual force of that yogi’s practice in the last life when he was a human being. In most cases, the subtle body would pursue that sporadically and not consistently. The result of that would be that the yogi would continue on in the ape species because of the application of his sense of compassion for the ape people whom he associated with in that fallen life.

It is very dangerous for a yogi to take a lower birth, even accidentally, because there is no telling when he will again come up to the human form of life. By all means one should not get too close to any lower species of life for regular association. One should not keep pets if it is possible because the service which one trades with the animals is itself the route to a lower transmigration for the human pet owner in as much as it is a route for a higher transmigration for the pet.

The route for rebirth is emotions. Therefore if you develop emotions towards an animal species, then it is likely that you will fuse into the body of an animal after death and come out as one of those species. We do in the same way take human births. The animals also by being human pets, get access to human births through developing affections for humans. It can go either way, but for the animal it is an upgrade and for the human it is a downgrade.

There is the story of Bharat, a king in India, who when he took up the life of a yogi in his elderly years, became attached to a deer calf which had lost its mother at the time of its birth. The mother ran away because of fear of a lion that was nearby. Bharat as a good human being rescued the deer calf and raised it but he became attached to the animal as his pet as we usually do.

At the time of death, Bharat was thinking of that deer and so he became attracted to the deer families and came out in his next life as a deer calf. In that deer body, due to the intensity of his practice in the life as a king, he used to go to the ashrams of yogis in the forest and steal their palm leaf books and try to eat the pages.

In the next birth he took birth as a yogi brahmin and in that birth he completed the yoga austerities through which one becomes liberated.

That is an example of what you are talking about but don’t run away with it. First take a look at the story and go over it carefully. In fact recently I made mention about the Jain gurudeva Mahavir. Well the father of Bharat in the life when he took the deer calf as a pet, was Rishabha (Ri-shab-ha) who is rated as an incarnation of God. So in that life Bharat had special yoga training in very advanced hatha yoga which is described in the Puranas like the Bhagavata Purana. Therefore King Bharata was not an ordinary yogi. He had connections with divine people, one of whom served as his father in the material world in that life when he fell to a lower species of life.

The Jain gurus claim that their disciplic succession began with Rishabha.

But there are other instances to show that taking a lower body is very risky even for a yogi. In the Mahabharata two ascetics got into a quarrel and then they cursed each other. The curses stuck so they took bodies as elephant and tortoise and were in those species for a long time. There is a story also about other great yogis who went down to lower species of life and who were left in those species for thousands of years transmigrating on and on.

Lord Buddha told of his lower transmigrations even in aquatic species. All of this is undesirable if you are interested in spiritual life but it is highly adventurous if you are not mature in self realization.

It is sheer madness to be in any other species except the human form of life on this planet because the mental state of these others form is devoid of any idea of self realization in real spiritual terms. One becomes obsessed with the activities of that specific species and one’s attachments are transferred into that species and then one has no idea of anything else.

Anyone who thinks that the human species is just like the other species and has the same capacity for liberation as the other species is a mad man. You have to place a high value on humanity and try to at least keep transmigrating as a human being until you can see your way to the divine world. The tools for attaining divine status just do not exist in the lower species. They are not available.

If you take a lower body, the truth is that you might be left for dead, which means that no yoga-guru might make an effort to get you out. In that case you will remain in that species and by the grace of the evolutionary thrust of material nature (check Darwin’s theories), you will over time, after many many lives, be again ushered into the human species.

If however some yoga guru or a deity has some special interest in you, then they will either do something supernatural to get you transferred back to human birth or they will send someone who will act in a way which causes you to again get a human body.

Even taking a human body is dangerous for a yogi because usually one gets hung up with the family of that body and one gets crazy about materialism and social security.

I took this body in this life just to write books and also to explain what I am discussing with you. But it was a risk. I was directly protected by Swami Shivananda who used to come to me and try to wise me up when I was an infant in Guyana in South American in the formation of this body. Once Lord Krishna directly tried to help me to wise up. So I was lucky. Because the temptation to become a materialistic dodder head is great.

So even in the human body it is dangerous to take these births what to speak about taking an animal form which is super-materialistic.

Right now I am thinking that I won’t take this risk again. I am not going to come again to teach this because people don’t want to hear it and many are cynical about this. It is just not worth the risk. Suppose I take another body to again teach this, and then somebody like Swami Shivananda takes no interest and does not keep talking to me astrally through my infant years. And suppose a deity, Krishna or Shiva, just does not bother to do anything to inspire me, then what will be my situation? You can see that I will sink down. Do you really think that you can liberate yourself? That you are God and all that crap? Without special help, you cannot achieve enlightenment in real terms. I don’t care if you meditate for a million years.

So these transmigrations are very risky. Get linked with a great yoga guru, with a divine being and then you are okay because their power will help you. Otherwise it is you alone in the middle of the Pacific ocean of the material world, swimming to who knows where, in a contest you can never win.
