Yoga Injuries

Over the years, I was approached by students who got injured doing yoga. People have this strange notion that there should not be injuries doing yoga, because yoga is perfect and should only give them well-being.

However yoga as in any other bodily and mental exercise may cause injuries at any time, even in the advanced stages. Today I pulled a muscle in the neck while doing a posture I did for many years. This happens.

Yoga is capable of causing both physical and mental if not emotional injury. It is just like everything else we do in this world, where even if you awakened as such and such a person day after day for years, still a time will come when you will not awaken any longer and then what will you say? Who will you blame for the death of your body, especially if it dies from natural causes?

Note the injury. Take steps in the next practice session if there is another one, to take care so as not to repeat or aggravate it. Some exercises which cause injury can be resumed after the injury heals but some other exercises should not be repeated. You have to judge for yourself which exercises you can continue doing after healing and which you should prohibit yourself from performing.

Please notice my recent post about this type of injuries and DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide).

A topical solution of, say, 50% DMSO, applied with a Q-Tip (painted) on the area of the injury will decrease pain and swelling immediately. Oral intake is also helpful.

DMSO is practically non-toxic, with toxicity levels about 1/10 that of aspirin (for comparison). It is being used in this country for sports injuries all over (mostly underground because of FDA chicanery).

If the injury persists, let me know, I will send you some through the mail.

The only drawback of DMSO is that because of the tremendous action reducing pain and swelling, the injured person may get a false sense of confidence before permanent healing.

Thanks for the offer. Yes, that sounds like a good way to deal with these issues.

I have had a few injuries of my own. I have twisted my right hand wrist, heel bone pain, thigh muscles strains and recently in the past few days, neck injury, which I am not sure happened after I lost balance doing a back-bending pose or applying the neck lock too forcefully.

Nevertheless, I do what I can to push forward. I am still not able to fully apply the neck-lock because of the pain, but I try to pay attention if in case kundalini rises, so I can hit the floor .:)

Hopefully, the pain and tension will go away in a few more days.
