Yoga as just body exercises

Yoga as just body exercises?
It is a good question since in a free world, a word can have any meaning the speaker chooses to attach to it. People have every right to use yoga as a word in any which way.
Originally however yoga means an 8th part process which began first of all with moral stipulations and approved behaviors. It is interesting that yoga has come to mean just physical exercises, because that is the 3rd aspect of yoga which begins with two aspects of Yama moral restraints and Niyama approved behaviors.
All of the classic books on yoga indicate that yoga is a loner discipline where a student learns it from a teacher and then practices by himself or herself. But in the West yoga has come to mean exercises in group sessions. Over the years many persons asked me to teach a yoga class, meaning to teach it to a group. Usually I just gently decline and disappear.
Yoga can be taught in a group but that is not the original intent of yoga. It did not begin in that way. It was individually taught in the Upanishads and other texts. In the Vedic literature, I never read of a group of student doing yoga with a teacher. It was always a student and the teacher.
Yoga in the West has come to mean group classes doing physical postures without any of the other aspects, except that some teachers include what they term as meditation which may or may not be related to what Patanjali or Krishna defined as yoga.
Some very exotic but not seductive postures being used, believe it or not, can be used to promote celibacy as well as sexuality. It could go either way, depending on the motive of the student.
A thorough exercise session may free a person of sex urge. It may also do the opposite which would be to increase sex desire.
Many of the postures could be sexually liberating or sexually entrapping all depending on the motive of the person and the ability to cause the energy which is released in the psyche to go everywhere evenly in the psyche, and to go into the head for expression there. If the energy is released for instance from the lower torso and then it immediately re-pools in that area then it will increase sex desire. If it is released and then it goes to every other part of the system and is distributed evenly all over, then it will increase self-satisfaction which will make the mind lose its grip on sex desire.
There are two other things I would like to mention which is that if breath infusion is added to those same postures, then the person would get released from sex desire as the breath would pull out and spread the released sexual hormones which are locked up in the lower torso.
The other thing is that many of these exercise sessions have music as the backdrop but in yoga music is not the backdrop. Instead inner focus is used which increases introspection ability.

In pictures of Ashrams, there are often groups of people practicing together. Is this out of the ordinary, or does it serve a different purpose?

Groups of people like that in yoga are new. Even in the oldest of the itihasa histories which is the Valmiki Ramayana, there is an extensive section of how yogis were trained and what they were trained in. In addition there was hardly one female doing yoga then as it is now.
If you go to a yoga class in Manhattan in New York, it might be 80% or more women. Previously yoga was mostly for males, because the purpose of it as it was defined then was not compatible to women.
The new purposes of yoga which are in vogue now are more suited to women even than it is to men.
The first yogi in the creation is Lord Shiva. The second yogi in the creation is his wife Goddess Durga but when Lord shiva was speaking to her about yoga she was not listening. A male fish listened, so the legend goes, and he became known as Matsyendranath when he became a human siddha yogi.
And why did the goddess finally decided to do yoga on her own?
It was because in one of her births as Parvati, she wanted to marry Shiva and yoga austerity was a requirement. But her mother used to object to her doing yoga and used to say to her. “O ma O ma” which means “Please do not do this. Stop this. Are you crazy?”
And so the goddess is also known by the name of Uma (oo-maa), the one who was told to stop doing yoga austerities.
If you were doing kundalini yoga for celibacy purposes or even if you were doing tantric kundalini yoga for sexual purposes, you would recognize that all of those postures could be used for yoga.

Does it concern you that there are so many purposes and intentions associated with Yoga? Are all useful and helpful purposes in some way legitimate?

My interest in yoga is as it is presented by Patanjali and also by Lord Krishna in chapter 6 of Bhagavad Gita and in the Uddhava Gita.
The varied other interest are not my concern.
These other interests must be beneficial to the proponents of those methods, for sure, otherwise many educated people even would not practice these systems.

Fair enough! I appreciate your answer.

Pool’s query:
When the breath disperse the sexual hormones across the physic, and one loses semen by ejaculation, will the physic keep storing those very sexual hormones still across the physic, or will it go out as well and start from square one storing sexual hormones again?

MiBeloved's Response:
Ejaculation of semen or of female sexual fluids is a whole other conversation. If the system or physique, has the genetic configuration to store semen and then emit it in ejaculations, then the system will do that. In fact that is the natural way. That is how these bodies were designed when they were in the embryonic formation.
First you eat, then the system strains out certain nutrients. These are taken by glands which in turn concentrate these. Then these are sent to the genitals where they are concentrated further. This produces a lust charge, which in turn causes a sexual urge. From this urge comes the instinct for ejaculation.
That is the natural system.
This system can be adjusted by doing yoga kriya using asana postures and breath infusion methods over a period of years. However in the first years of doing that yoga, the system still regresses to its way of storing up sexual fluids for sexual expression. That is exactly what happens so even though the student practices yoga, the student will find that he or she is compelled to sexual expression again and again due to the genetic force of sex desire in the psyche.
It can change but only after years of efficient practice, then the system no longer does this storage for sex configuration. But that storage is the natural way so it won’t go away just by wishful thinking.
The trick is to realize that you will not beat nature at her game unless you spend years practicing but in the meantime keep up your practice even though you notice that you are not denting nature’s sex game. Thus even though you realize that you keep falling back into the old instinct, still some of the energy is being used for the yogic dispersion according to the force and regularity of your breath infusion practice.
And then over time, the system will change because of your persistence with the breath infusion practice.
