Why Yoga?

The question as to why someone does yoga has relevance because the motive for any action, activity or life style is the supportive basis for the practice. Motive colors and even controls the direction of development of a practice.

Why do you do yoga?

Are you like Gautam Buddha where you took off from a luxurious lifestyle because you were spooked at the major causes of human trauma, features like sickness, old age, death and rejection of the premise of living for social wellbeing?

Are you like the body Dhruva, who wanted to be greater than the planetary creator, Brahma?

Are you like Parvati, who did yoga because she wanted the supreme ascetic, Shiva, as her husband?

Are you like Indrajit, who mastered yoga for the purpose of military conquest?

Are you like Drona who intended to use yoga to commit suicide because he heard that his dear son was dead?

Irrespective of the initial motive, a person may or may not budge from that original objective. Even if God or a god comes to give the yogi help, the yogi may still not change his purpose for doing yoga.

Hiranyakashipu retained his resentments towards the person who killed his brother, even after the god Brahma interviewed him and awarded him with a near-imperishable material body.

Dhruva to the contrary, changed his mind and no longer wanted to be greater than the creator-god Brahma, after Lord Vishnu appeared to him and offered to give him the supremacy he desired.

Are you getting some juice from yoga?

Is it sustaining you?

Are you doing it because you are circumstantially being pressured to do the practice, or because it is the growing fad?

Is there something more interesting than yoga, where as soon as you finish the practice, your mind reconnects with that something and pushes aside the experiences you have doing the practice?
