What is this that was happening to me last night?

I have been working on staying present, in the moment, through activity or non-activity throughout the duration of my recent days. I've noticed that while I am counting my breath, or staying present in NOW, my mind doesn't mindlessly wander; I am more focused on what I am experiencing at that moment in time, not on my thoughts.

the mind-chatter has gone down significantly since I started doing this. there is something very freeing about disassociating yourself from your thoughts that mindlessly occur whether you want them to or not.

since I started doing this, my mind has become 90% more calm when I meditate. It's as if I rarely find my mind wandering at all compared to what it used to be like. here is my question:

last night after meditation, I laid down on my back. I needed to go to sleep because of how early I had to wake up, however, I wanted to continue this thought process of no-thought and follow it into sleep. usually not very long after meditating, the mindless head-chatter resumes and I am robbed the experience of the present.

when I laid down, I fell into a deeper sense of timelessness and I stayed focused on the point between my eyebrows. I started to hear a very high pitched sound, similar to the noise you would hear if a TV was on in the room or something. it was a very high pitched noise that almost seems like it is ALWAYS happening, I am just not tuned to the frequency to hear it all the time... my thoughts get in the way and distract me (assuming).

I went deeper into the sound, until it got louder and louder. suddenly, an overwhelming, overpowering, extremely loud sound happened that I will liken to a race car zooming past my head. it shook my entire body. I believe it may have continued if I was welcoming to it, however it startled me and before I knew it, it was gone.

once my heart rate dropped, I was able to go back into that sense of timelessness and the noise happened again! startled the hell out of me again! this happened maybe 5 or 6 times before I finally fell asleep.

has anyone else experienced what I am talking about, or does anyone know what it is that was happening to me?  this high pitched sound and then finally this really loud noise that startled me...?

When you follow a meditation process from one teacher, another teacher of a different or similar process may not be able to help you to improve on the process. This is why it is important to have a relationship where one can ask questions of the person who teaches the process you are using. In this case it is the NOW process but I do not teach this. I think that there are members on the forum who learnt or perhaps who teach this but it is a matter of inspiring them to help you with that.

I can however discuss the part concerning the loud sound and the high pitched frequency sound. The high pitched sound is the naad sound. You can use that as an anchor point in meditation but at first when one tries to use this, it might seem to be empty and monotonous. Therefore you have to persist and try to keep yourself in it for a few years perhaps because it will change into being a spiritual enriching sound.

The loud sound is heard in the psyche usually either when you are about to sleep or soon after the first awareness after sleeping or dreaming. This sound comes from the separation activity of the subtle body from out of the gross body.

If you are reacting to it with fear that is because of being unfamiliar with it. Sometimes during a war, a soldier gets the jitters every time there is an explosion, even if the explosions are occurring 5 miles away and are no danger to him at the moment.

Over time this fear usually goes away.

When travelling at sea out in the ocean, people sometimes get the shivers when large waves ride over the bow of a ship but seasoned crew men just ignore it and continue their tasks.

One way to look at this is that your heart is beating, your lungs are contracting and expanding continuously and you are not aware of it most of the time. Your stomach is growling but mostly you do not hear it. Just imagine how frightening it would be for a bacterium to be in your blood stream in a blood vessel in which blood is going into your heart. The tiny organism would be hearing a loud thump, thump thump and it would be getting louder and louder. It would be scared to death, and still the heart is really no danger to it.

Somehow you need to calm yourself down and just hear these sounds as a matter of interest. Try to track them down to see where they originate. Be an explorer.

Read the Astral Projection book and the Sleep Paralysis one if you have not done so already.

This happens when you transition into the dream state consciously aware, the onset of an out-of-body experience.

Like Michael said, the fear will fade away. The more you experience these states with a consciously aware mind the more your subconscious will adjust to it, in return it will not startle you if this is what you want.

The high pitched screeching sounds occurs as you enter deep trance states consciously aware. Michael’s books will explain all about it. The people who join astralvoid.com are interested in exploring via astral projection. I do not know what your intentions are. I think you should read Michael’s books first if you haven’t already.

Hello Frank!

It is encouraging to read about your progress. Please stay tuned to this site and participate daily.

Swami Krishnananda from Divine Life Society fame, wrote to me in 1999 in a letter, that even now (then, then) Achilles was fighting Hector in front of the walls of Troy. What he meant to say was that everything was happening at the same time in the Godhead.

Anything that diverts attention to the mind and its games is worthy of development. Breath awareness or breath control, as you mentioned, like a mantra, is one of those tools. It was the greatest tool expounded by Swami Hariharananda Giri Guruji, the master of the shortest breath spell.

Shall we say that the NOW is eternal, imperishable, consistent?

What is it that we know around here that surrounds us, that has those characteristics detailed above?

The mind is not, we know for sure…for it is fickle like the thoughts that come and arise from it. The material world, our bodies, our surrounding, are not either, definitely, for they change in front of our eyes…

Of the experiences you wrote, only that Naad sound is totally consistent, beyond time, and always in the NOW.

Tuning to that sound, and letting that sound be your teacher, lead you into transcendental awareness, could prove to be the solution…wouldn’t you say so?

Unless it knocks you down into expectancy. I always remember this movie directed by Akira Kurosawa when he was very old, named “Runaway Train”. Jon Voight, Eric Roberts, Rebecca de Mournay. “Manny”, Voight’s character explains what one should do after escaping from prison, and into compliance…how he was given the task of cleaning this floor, and how one should clean it, and clean it, and clean it…

Frank…can you do that? Can you tune to Naad over and over and stay in the NOW while complying?
