Reality it seems is a continuum of subtle realities even as it is interpreted through perceived and experienced gross cells leading to a subtle system. 

Ultimately, there is always an adjacent subtle reality to this plane of life which can be evidenced by withdrawal from or cessation of the grosser expression.

One point of note is how deep impressions run in the mind and the strong implication of memories. There is also a possible reference to the shiftiness and randomness of adjacent subtle environments.
