Unaware states of being indeed do exist:
This is a profound statement, something that is conveniently overlooked because to accept that will cringe on our need for being absolute beings, people who have a choice.
Takes courage to face up to this truth.
There was a similar statement made by one of my yoga gurus. Srila Yogeshwarananda was once asked that if a person gained a high state of realization, if that person could ever resume a lower plane of consciousness again.
His answer was simply this:
"If it happened to you before, it can happen again. The mere idea that it happened, tells you what your status is right then and there. If you were overpowered by a lower plane before, it can overpower you again. Don't get cocky about anything."
That refutes an old idea coming out of India, which says that once you are liberated you can never be conditioned again.
There is a verse in the Gita too which supports what the yoga guru said, which is where Krishna told Arjuna that Arjuna was in a category of beings who do not remember past births. It is not their natural state to have that level of recall but Krishna said that he was in the category with full recall:
========================
The Blessed Lord said: Many of My births transpired, and yours, Arjuna. I recall them all. You do not remember, O scorcher of the enemies. (Bhagavad Gita 4.5)*
