Allow me to share with you a section of the great book "Bhrhadyogiyajñavalkyasmrti", Chapter II, which the Acharya lent me, and which I am still studying.

===========================

The Mantras beginning with Pranava are said to be the bestower of the four-fold ideals of human life. All the Mantras are produced from Pranava and ultimately dissolve in it.

Omkara is auspicious, holy, wholesome, accomplishing all desires, the highest Brahman and the chief among all the Mantras.

In the beginning it (OM) was pronounced from the mouth of accomplished Prajapati who worshipped it. Therefore it has self-existent nature of Brahman according to the Rishis.

Gayatri is the Chanda and Agni is Daivata. It is to be used everywhere in the beginning of different rites.

Omkara, whose color is described as white, should always be used in the beginning of every religious act. This is called Viniyoga.

Brahman has been declared threefold as Om, Tat, Sat and accordingly prescribed in the Brahmanas, Vedas and sacrifices in the past.

On that account, by reciting Om, the rites of sacrifice, donation, and penance are continuously practiced by the expounders of the Vedas. The Vedas start with Pranava. Vedas stand around Pranava. All the literature is contained in the Pranava. Hence one should practice Pranava.

The Omkara applied to Pranava and Pranava applied to Brahman lead to the Bliss which is Parabrahman. Having entered that one attains the immortal state.

The Pranava is like a bow. The Atman is like an arrow, and the Brahman is the target.

Pranava, which is beyond speech, touch, taste, form, etc is considered as the support of the ultimate Reality.

The Gayatri beginning with Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah, etc has got 24 syllables and the 4 Vedas all these taken together are called as Omkara.

The Omkara should be placed, devoid of all conceptions, in the great endless space of the heart (as if) supported by lotus stalk.

The mind should be confined there (in Omkara) till it gets purified. This is called Yoga.
