Stealing is so essential a trait that even if one gains sufficient wealth one may still on occasion make an outright theft from a lower class individual.

Once the status quo is established, one will avoid having to take favors from those in a lower class, but one will agree to hire such persons and if possible at the lowest possible wage. The next step is to pull them up if they sluff off. These lower class people need to be pulled up for their own good, less they become lazy loafers living at the expense of their betters. This attitude is the one we have when we are in a status role and feel that we deserve the best and that others on lower rungs of the social ladder, are rightly placed to be at our beck and call.

However providence can be irregular such that even though a well-to-do arrogant individual has sufficient money to live in comfort, he or she will find occasions when it is necessary to steal from the lower classes.

Consider this situation:

In ancient times in China it was very important for a queen to have children, especially sons. If perchance however the queen’s body failed to produce any progeny, even daughters, who were second rated, the queen should sometimes send one of her maids to sleep with the emperor. These maids were, technically speaking, slaves of the queen.

If that maid who slept with the king became pregnant, then the queen would confiscate the child as soon as the child was weaned from its mother. At the birth of the child, the child was inspected by the court’s physicians and by astrologers and if these determined that the infant was favorable for that dynasty, the queen would make her decision to steal the child from her maid.

Sometimes there would be a conversation like this.

Queen:

As soon as one and one half years have passed, you must give me the child. This is my son which you received in a conjugal embrace with the king. Do not think otherwise.

Maid:

But even though you request this child in one and one half years, I am afraid that I will reluctantly part with this child because by them I will surely be attached to this infant as its mother. Why should you do such a cruel thing to both the infant and to me?

Queen:

Do not speak like this again if you value your life. I could have both you and the child to be killed. Never forget that. At least you can live in the palace and so will the child but the child will be known as my son. What is better, a cruel death or life as my servant. Make your choice.
