Sexual Dream Objectivity

Email correspondence from a student who keeps a dream journal:

My dream was of a sexual nature... There was penetration, but attention was fixed on trying to analyze what took place internally; no pleasure was sensed, no undue excitement took place as would normally be expected. Results of the observation were not retained.

MiBeloved’s response:

Activities of the subtle body, irrespective of what those activities are should be noted by the yogi, if for no other reason, for the fact that the subtle body is the more enduring body. The physical body, which we are very attentive to, will only last for 100 years give or take a few. That is its maximum duration. But the subtle body will last for the duration of at least our solar system. Thus it makes sense to be attentive to its activities. For one thing, just to consider how we reincarnate in material bodies, one material body will go out like a cheap light bulb in a jiffy, and then we will be left with the subtle body, which will be used as the framework for the next material body either as a human being or as something else.

Dreams of sexual nature have much significance for the student yogi. When it comes to reincarnation, sexual behavior of the parents of the next body is the startup incidence. When you have a mature physical body, the main interest in sex is usually to enjoy it. When you lose that body and are left with a subtle body only, then your interest in the sex activities of those who are on the physical side, have to do with your becoming an embryo.

When one has a material body attention to sex has to do with procuring enjoyment and fulfillment from sexual intercourse, but after death that same interest converts usually into procuring a new embryo.

This does not mean that there is no pleasure demand or procurement on the astral side after death. There certainly is that. In fact the deceased person might not be thinking of getting an embryo from his or her attraction to a sexual indulgence opportunity or scene, but nevertheless the result of the attraction may be an embryo, just as if two people met physically and had sexual indulgence for pleasure, a pregnancy might be what nature produces as a result.

There is what you want to do and what nature will produce as a result of the action. Maturity really means to know the difference between the two and to look at it square on.

If during an astral sexual experience, no pleasure is felt, then it means that the observing self was not in a dimension where the pleasure was taking place, or either part was non-responsive to the act. For instance during World War 2 when the Russians were counterattacking the Germans, there were many incidences of rape by Russians soldiers. In some cases the German women who were victimized did not feel any pleasure but in some cases there was pleasure even though it was a force sexual performance.

To feel a pleasure from an experience, if there is pleasure in the first place, one has to be on the level of awareness where that pleasure is occurring. Astrally if the observing self is in one dimension and the subtle body’s sensual apparatus is in another dimension, then no pleasure will be experienced by the observing self.

But there could be sexual participation without pleasure. Of course if you are on a plane of awareness which is not where the pleasure is happening or if you are detached completely from the experience, then you will not be able to observe the pleasure effects and energy distribution during a sexual indulgence.

To find out what the kundalini does during a sexual experience, you have to be on the plane of pleasure where the kundalini expresses itself and also be simultaneously detached in an observational view.

Desirable sexual pleasure experience is very subjective, and that makes it one of the most difficult experiences to objectify.

Dear Michelji, An yogi, who is regularly meditating, pranayama and Yogasanas, can he engage in sexual intercourse with physical body? Because, I've read somewhere, when a person is engaged in sex, then he will not be able to perform meditation or his body will not cooperate in achieving kundalini awakening due to his loss of energy. Please explain this. Thanks in advance.

MiBeloved’s Response:

As a standard rule ideally a yogi who is doing kundalini yoga should not be involved in sexual activities and should be a brahmachari, but there is a kundalini yoga practice which can be done by grihastas who are involved in sexual activities according to Vedic injunctions for householder ashram.

Besides this there is a kundalini yoga practice for grihastas who for one reason or the other are fated to be involved in sexual activities even though they are not living the grihastas life according to the Vedic injunctions. In other words people from other cultures and even Indians who are not familiar with and cannot culturally follow the Vedic grihastas system.

I ask you to realize that kundalini yoga can be done by any human being at any time in any place, and kundalini will be aroused if the person uses an efficient pranayama system expertly. Stated in another way if there is a kundalini shakti in a human body it can be aroused. In fact the presence of sexual energy in any human body directly tells us that a kundalini in that body can be aroused.

If a person can have sexual excitement in a body, if a person can have a sexual climax experience in a body, then kundalini can be raised in that body.

Will kundalini awakens just after a person has had a climatic sexual intercourse?

MiBeloved’s Response:

It can be awakened but then kundalini will not have the full charge because most of the energy which is normally used in going up the spine would have been expended in the sexual intercourse experience. But that also applies even to sexual intercourse itself, at least for males, where if they have one or two sexual climax experiences, their bodies usually refuse to become sexually aroused until the body is rested again and can generate sexual hormone energy afresh.

Can a person meditate after a sexual intercourse experience?

MiBeloved’s Response:

A person certainly can do that but there might be then a low quality of meditation especially if the mind was depressed by the loss of energy during the sexual experience.

For sure most of the ancient books which described yoga, like Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali Yoga Sutra, celibacy was recommended and for grihastas householders, the rules in books like Manu Samhita are recommended. That is ideal but that does not mean that a person who fails to observe these rules cannot raise kundalini or meditate.

If there is any question at all, it would be regarding the quality of the meditation, the deepness of it and the level gained by kundalini arousal.
