Meditation this morning began with naad sound to the left by the left ear. This happened as soon as I sat to meditate. There was no distraction. Immediately I was in touch with naad. Then about 30 seconds after I switched myself so as to see naad light. This took a tiny bit of effort.
So what is the difference?
It is this:
For naad sound I began with dhyana which is the 7th step in yoga or the 2nd step in samyama.
For naad light I began with dharana, which is the 6th step in yoga or the 1st step in samyama.
Let’s talk this in English.
For naad sound I linked into it spontaneously and without effort (dhyana).
For naad light I linked into it deliberately and with effort (dharana).
After about 5 minutes, naad light linkage converted into effortless spontaneous linkage and after about 15 minutes it turned into samadhi which is the same effortless linkage but lasting on its own for about 20 minutes.
When I came out of this, or stated honestly, when I was taken out of this, I found that my physical head had dropped downwards. The tongue of it was pushed against the bottom front teeth and was stiff. An instinct pulled back the tongue and when that happened there was a tiny stinging sensation because some small part of the tongue was pushed between two teeth and was pinched on release.
During the samadhi phase there was just a slight quantity of objective awareness. It was for the most part subjective, making it impossible for me to describe the state. It was a state but since my objectivity was left behind, I did not have any means of assessing the experience.
