Srila Yogeshwarananda explained that the entity has a seeping out energy which exudes from the individual self. The self is an energy-generation reality. It cannot stop generating energy. Its nature is to generate and exude energy. That is what it is. For the process of liberation to be effective, it must take into account its existential habits. Since there will be a seeping out energy and there is also a need for shelter by virtue of the relative status of the entity, the liberation process needs to have within it a method for effectively taking care of these facets of the self.
During meditation when one adheres to naad sound proficiently, that takes care of the reliance feature of the self, where it has to take shelter in something else which is fulfilling to it. This is a stop-gap measure, or a shelter taken for the time being since the self really needs a fully compatible environment to express varied relationships in.
With naad as reliance energy, the self must then deal with its perception need, its need to use sensual energy. This is denied in the instructions from Patanjali where he insists that the perception means be shut down. However the advice of Patanjali results in supernatural perception. Or stated directly, the shutdown of the ordinary sense perceptions will result in the development of supernatural perception in the course of time.
Some yogis recommended the inner staring at the third eye area. This is also stated in the Bhagavad Gita. Srila Yogeshwarananda says that after the yogi is situated in naad sound, he or she may look forward to see if there is the manifestation of supernatural perception. If there is nothing, then the yogi should pull in the sensual interest energy into the core self.
Instead of peering at the third eye with the usual demands to see into the spiritual world, the yogi should instead pull in the sensual energy. Then again when there is calm and when the pulled-in sensual energy is quiescent, then the yogi may again look forward to see if the supernatural vision has developed.
