Tuesday 12-11-12

 

6am: I rise and attempt to recollect and record any dreams. 

 

Simple stretching mainly cobras and child’s poses, some deep breathing before joyfully performing motherly morning duties with my 17 year old son who attends school.  I stay on a similar sleep/wake schedule with him until he is independent.

 

7:15-8:15: Meditation in nature at the wooded grounds of my church, some days i sit in the center of a labyrinth, some days in a wooden chair swing.  There are trees everywhere and the energy is conducive to great meditations on the Mother.

 

8:30-10am:  Asana, Pranayama and Study

 

As a Sivananda yoga teacher i’ve been generally following a standard but intuitively elaborated full Sivananda sequence as taught to me by the primary disciples of Swami Vishnu-Devananda at the Val Morin headquarters in 2000.  I do postures and have consistently practiced Kapalabhati and Anuloma Viloma, experiencing excellent results over the years.  It took time to comprehend what’s happening with anuloma viloma but for me it’s effective and necessary.

 

Studied Michael Beloved’s Book ‘Celibacy of the Mind, Emotions and Life Force’.  Today i was studying toward the end of the book.  Especially on the citrus prayers and how to properly offer the fruit to Lord Shiva and at the very end,

9:30-11:00am: It’s Tuesday, a day off, so i began practice of Shivambu kalpa boiling down to 1/2 and then taking a full body exfoliation and massage chanting Om Namah Sivaya, this morning I also chanted Om Shree Maha Saraswatiyea Namaha.  Throughout week, whatever i do not drink is stored in glass jars for the weekly rub down.  I have had nice results with this practice so far.

 

11:30am:  Lunch is my first meal: Pureed vegetables, coconut oil, nutritional yeast and lemon water today. Despite being vegan, I’m still working on my diet and recently gave up all sugar and grains including most fruit except for lemons and some lime and a little of tomato and avocado.  This was a big deal for me but immediately I felt the benefits of this long overdue relinquishment.  (I also recently read in Michael’s book Celibacy for the Householder Part 4 on Diet and how sugar sabotages our efforts).

 

1:30pm:  Pranayama. Long discussion on Vedanta with Yogi Chris (Kripamaya).

 

I work with meditation and breathing exercises when necessary during the day to clear my mind and draw upward on my kundalini reinforcing the benefits of brahmacharaya.

 

Evening:  Mini Maha Mantra Kirtan with myself. Breath infusion, Meditation

 

11:30: Sleep

Having a daily practice is important and so is making notations about experiences and system of practice.

 

Spiritual practice should be just as essential and routine as brushing teeth in the early morning.

 

Gayatri mantra was originally a call to the sun-god who was known as Savituh (savitur). The three regions in the Vedic cosmology are bhuh (bhur), bhuvah and svah which are the realms which are governed by the sun-god.

 

It was a call prayer to the sun god deity used by caste brahmins three times per day at sunrise, noon and sunset.

From Bhagavad Gita:

 

पिताहमस्य जगतो

 

माता धाता पितामहः

 

वेद्यं पवित्रमोंकार

 

ऋक्साम यजुरेव .१७

           

pitāhamasya jagato

 

mātā dhātā pitāmaha

 

vedya pavitramokāra

 

ksāma yajureva ca (9.17)

 

pitāham = pitā — father + aham — I; asya — of this; jagato = jagata — of the universe; mātā — mother; dhātā — creator; pitāmaha — grandfather; vedyam — subject to be known; pavitram — purifier; okāra — sacred syllable Om; k — Rig Veda; sāma — Sāma Veda; yajur — Yajur Veda; eva — indeed; ca — and

 

I am the father of this universe, the mother, the creator, the grandfather, the subject of education, the purifier, the sacred syllable Om, the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas. (9.17)

गायत्री छन्दसामहम्

 

मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहम्

 

ऋतूनां कुसुमाकरः१०.३५

māsānā mārgaśīro'ham

 

tūnā kusumākara (10.35)

 

bhatsāma — Brihat Sāma Melody; tathā — also; sāmnām — of the Sāma Veda chants; gāyatrī — Gayatri; chandasām — of the poetic hymns; aham — I; māsānām — of months; mārgaśīro = mārgaśīra - November-December lunar month; 'ham = aham — I; tūnām — of seasons; kusumākara — spring

 

Of the Sāma Veda chants, the Brihat Sāma melody represents Me. Of the poetic hymns, I am the Gayatri. Of months, I am best represented by the November-December lunar month. Of the seasons, I am best compared to Spring. (10.35)

You are your kid's mom; an expression I heard to mean a dedicated and responsible mother.

 

That in itself can be considered a level of sadhana as well in terms of taking to one's duty diligently; without that it is difficult. It is a service to the entrusted soul, a benefit to self and a contribution to the community. Thank you for your example.
