AM Practice

Woke up at Brahma-Muhurta at 4:20 AM. Practice was good. Although conducted in a motel where air circulation is not optimal (however I turn the air conditioning off and open the window), concentration afforded is better than at home, I noticed with surprise, devoid of the tanmatras of distress accumulated there through time and the family interaction. Now I see why yogis were advised to go on their own.

 

Svadhyaya: Continued reading the “Bhagavad Gita Explained”. One more comment about the translation of “dharmakshetre” as “the place of settling political affairs”, I never bought into the translation or idea that this word represents a map of the body, and the Pandus and Kurus represent this or that. I think those type of translation do violence to the original intent of the text, which does not need any fantasy like that to shine in the first place.

 

Dedication: Practice dedicated to Lord Shiva after mantra and incantation to the Mahayogi, Maheshwara.

 

Breath Infusion: 30 minutes of Bhastrika prânâyâma infusing breath on the navel. I soon broke out a sweat during the floor asanas. Today I was feeling naughty and used the “School of Hard Knots” rule, meaning I wanted to know if Kundalini was there really. I touted her thus: “Hey babe, kick my butt”. And she, always the dominatrix, acquiesced twice, hurling me to the floor after the kneeling asanas, while standing and applying the locks (I was able to kneel on time in both cases). There was a deep feeling of bliss coming from the head and bhakti for Krishna.

 

Meditation: 25 minutes meditation on the back of the head. I notice that at some point during the meditation, today and before, the breath get alarmingly short. This is in line with Hariharananda’s shortest breath somehow, which he called Udana Air. But the body rings an alarm bell as if one is getting into a cataleptic state.

 

Question: Is this state to be elongated or avoided?

Those translations or interpretations of the battle of Kurukshetra being the material body of the yogi, have their time and place. The real fault in these is that there is no declaration that the Mahabharata is history but that in addition to that it can be used as an analogy about the psychological province of the individual psyche of a yogi.

 

For instance in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Narada Muni tells the story of King Puranjana and when he was asked about the ancestry and legacy of that king, he admitted that he made up the story to objectively explain the situation of the person whom he was speaking to, who was a real king named Prachinabarhi. Narada then told this king that he was like the fictitious Puranjana.

 

When people try to say there is no real history and that it is an analogy only, then that is misleading because we have to face these situation on the physical and psychological plane as well. The problem we have in the external world are in a sense outcomes of what we are dealing with internally and they also feed into the internal history and is affected by that in a mutual way.

 

In the Kriya Yoga book you will see that the analogy of the battle to that of the individual self is mentioned but not in a way to deny or de-emphasize the physical reality.

 

A yogi has to manage both the physical circumstance and the psychological one. Both skills need be cultivated.

You may as well have confidence in the life force system in this respect. In some sessions sometimes the breath gets to almost nothing while in others there is a shortness of breath.

 

Observe this and look to see how it is being regulated by the life force. Some of this happens in preparation for astral projection. Sometimes there is a sudden pull breath like a jerk. There might be one or two or three or more of these. These are operations which the life force routinely does.

 

Consider that mostly when these things occur, the observing self is usually drowsy or totally unconscious or totally disconnected from the dimension in which this is happening and so it is usually ignorant of these actions of the life force.

 

Hence to be in a position to observe these is a tell-tale sign about increased awareness during astral projection.
