Naad sound meditation is not a stagnant, everyday-the-same meditation but it can be that for those persons who are not getting deeper and deeper into the subjective realm of the mind.
Unfortunately most meditators do not have a method to get deeper and deeper and their daily meditation is the same every day, entering a state of consciousness which seems to be a oneness thing, a spatial dimension which has no differentiation or objectivity.
Naad meditation is rich, if you can get deeper and deeper into it. It is more than sound.
It is vibration.
It is form.
It is vision.
It is feeling.
It is pressure.
It is energy.
It is healing away from the riff-raff ideas-thoughts-images of the mind.
Currently under the direction of Srila Yogeshwarananda, an astral yogi, I am taking instructions on how to go further with naad. At this stage I am doing a flush-forward practice. In this practice, bhastrika pranayama is required. Here is the method:
1. Do bhastrika to blow away all resistance at the frontal navel chakra.
2. Push infused compressed prana which forms in the lungs down and around the body, from the lungs to the navel to the groin area, to muladhara chakra and then up the spine.
3. Switch to infusing the centre of the trunk of the subtle body.
4. Do this until the entire trunk is filled with pranic light and the light overflows through the neck into the head.
5. Do bhastrika focusing on the frontal part of the head, the forehead area where thinking, imaging and analysis usually take place. (This will subdue and disorient the buddhi intellect organ in the head of the subtle body).
6. Sit to meditate.
7. Hear naad sound in meditation either spontaneously or by locating it at the back side of the head. It may be more to the right or more to the left; it may be by the left or right ear.
8. Move the core-self into the naad sound while staying centered in the back of the head.
9. Encourage naad sound to move forward as you move back into it.
10. It should move into the frontal part of the brain, flushing forward like stream of water gushing down a hillside, moving on the right and left sides of the core-self
11. Remain stationed in the back center of the subtle head.
12. You may find that the core-self forms here as a bead (like a pearl) and moves up about one inch with a slight quarter turn clockwise rotation.
This technique is for re-conditioning the frontal part of the subtle head so that it confirms to the instructions of Patanjali for yoga cittavritti nirodhah. There is this idea, and rightly so that one cannot stop the mind from doing the cittavritti stuff and then there are those who simply sit and imagine that the mind is not thinking anymore. And then there are others who sit and feel that by just observing the thoughts and not reacting to them, that is what Patanjali intended.
However with the use of pranayama, the mind can actually cease the cittavritti stuff. Naad helps tremendously in bring on this achievement but one must also take help from pranayama practice.
Of course on occasion any meditator without using pranayama may find the mind in a state of momentary thoughtlessness but that is not enough. With the proper method of pranayama, one can cause the mind to do so for at least 15 minutes every day. And then the mind returns to its normal chatter state but with much less chatter than before one mastered the practice.
