When doing breath infusion practice, one must check to be sure that the air is actually going into the system and is being compressed. It should be absorbed by the lungs and sent to various parts of the body in a hurry. It should not be entering the lungs and then leaving the lungs without infusion. One student recently mentioned to me the ease with which he could do breath infusion in comparison to when he first started when it was just not clicking properly.

 

However be sure that the air is being compressed. One may be breathing rapidly with ease and not be compressing the air into the system. The lungs might be taking in the air and not absorbing the air. Or the lungs might be taking in the air and absorbing it into the lung cells and then breathing out the air without it being distributed.

 

Therefore be sure that mentally you are compressing the air into the lungs and forcing it into the system. First it should be forced into the navel area and then when that is done to proficiency, one may force it down into the groin area and beyond.

 

One important part of this practice is to keep your mind attentive to what is going on in the psyche. This means that the mind should not be attentive to what is happening outside of the body. There is a nice instruction about this in the book I am now translating which is the Anu Gita. Here it is:

But one who is attaining the proficiency in yoga practice, should not be discouraged. Hear about this how one whose primary objective in life is yoga, practices trance consistently.

 

When thinking of a place which was seen before, one should reside in the city in which the incidence occurred. The mental operations are within the psyche not outside of it.

 

Being situated inside the city, he should reside there with his mind absorbed in the exterior and interior features of that place.

 

Meditating in that place, he sees the whole reality being situated in the body. The mind should not in any way wander outside the body. (Anu Gita 4.31-33)

Imagine that I was doing this infusion practice since 1972 and still I am distracted during practice by light which enters the eyes, by sounds which are heard outside the body, and mostly by the crazy security-paranoid kundalini which is always obsessed about using the senses like the eyes and ear to keep track of everything which is outside of the body. The Kundalini is a paranoid schizophrenic and it is crazy about keeping track of whatever is outside of the body.

 

Even now after so many years of practice and also of meditation practice, I wrap a dark cloth around my eyes and head so as to keep kundalini from compelling the senses of the body to pursue its interest outside of the body during practice. I do this wrap also when meditating.

 

So if I am doing this after all that practice, then what is the matter with me? Am I failing to control my mind or is it that I cannot control it without these additional actions? I will let you figure this one out. But consider that I am not a cool guy, and I don’t have a cool process that puts me into peace and happiness and all that good stuff.

Be sure that the air is being compressed and that your attention is with the breath infusion, keeping track of where the air is going. Keep your mind inside of the body during the practice. During the practice don’t allow kundalini to run you around like a little pawn. It should not be telling you where to focus, and when. It should not distract you from your intended focus within the body and your effort to affect the kundalini itself with the breath infusion.
