Yoga Practice Habit Failure
This morning I was with a student of kundalini yoga, who learnt the practice some ten years ago. This person also studied other systems of spirituality and practiced others but it seems that he was unable to make a consistent habit out of practice.
Making a spiritual discipline a habit, is a special ability of a person who has done much yoga in their past lives. In the Bhagavad Gita there is a verse as follows:
In that environment, he is inspired with the cumulative intellectual interest from a previous birth. And from that time, he strives again for yoga perfection, O dear son of the Kurus. (6.43)
So if one does not have this cumulative intellectual interest in yoga from a previous birth, one cannot strive again automatically in the new body. One will not have the impetus.
When we were doing the exercises, about 5 minutes after we began, Yogi Bhajan showed up on the astral side. Lucky for me this process which I teach as kundalini yoga was learnt from him and so the students I adopt are his students with me as a stand-in teacher. He checked the body of the student, that is the subtle body and then showed me a lump of cloudy energy in the bottom part of the trunk of the body. This was the sexual subtle force in the body.
For kundalini yoga purposes the sexual energy is compressed and sent into the spine up into the head, instead of hanging around the pubic area. This student because of not practicing consistently for the past 10 years, had no compressed sexual force.
Yogi Bhajan was just plain disgusted because here was a student who always complains about this and that but who does not maintain the practice, not even ten minutes of practice per day.
So how can there be results from the practice, if the student does not practice?
Then Yogi Bhajan said this to me,
“I like you because you do not have any students. You have no ambition to be anybody’s guru. People like you make the best students for me. As soon as somebody gets this idea that he is a teacher, it is all over because then he no longer pays attention to what is developing in his psyche. He thinks that what his students are going through is his gig. He then loses track of his own advancement.
“With you it is different you know that when you are teaching, it has little to do with your own progression. You are eager to get rid of these students because you realize that when teaching you have to neglect your own advancement.”
After that Yogi Bhajan left.
With this body now at about 60 years of age, I have little time to stay in it, even if it is not killed suddenly in a freak accident or does not come down with an incurable disease. So my practice is all the more important. These guys like this one student who want to fool around with spiritual practice and neglect it for many years while doing other things and chasing after other rainbows, may have much time to catch up because their bodies are younger and they trust that nature will be nice to them in their old age when they plan to resume practice. I can’t indulge in such fantasies, nature has always been mean to me, so that protects me from becoming lax with practice.
