Question from Sanjay on LinkedIn:
I try to meditate in morning soon after rising up or after a small walk. What one should do when one is getting up due to some wired thought? How we get ourself disconnect from it? I normally chant Gaytri Mantra to make concentration but after a few moments mind in on old path.
MiBeloved’s Response:
Personally I feel that persons who use meditation to solve out social problems are misusing the process. This is because I have not read in Patanjali Yoga Sutras that yoga (which includes meditation) was designed to remove social hassles.
Karma yoga is the process which removes social hassles by the use of spiritual insight into the circumstances which confront us. But karma yoga = karma + yoga.
Karma yoga is a deliberate act of using the insight gained while doing yoga in the social circumstances of life. Krishna said in the Bhagavad Gita that initially some thousands of years before he lectured it to Arjuna, he taught karma yoga to legendary kings. These persons were rulers and the sons of those rulers, as the names in the Bhagavad Gita indicate.
Motive for doing yoga is very important and affects what one gets from the practice and which direction one goes in the practice.
To get the self disconnected from an undesirable thought, one should cut off one’s interest in the said thought. As a thought develops in the mind, one becomes aware of it at some stage of its development. Then one can do several things including look at the ideas presented.
If it is something desirable then one becomes super-attached to the thought because it will provide some pleasure in the psyche. If it’s undesirable one may try to move away from the thought or to stop it or to divert oneself to something else for instance, a mantra, for example.
However to really hammer away at this, one should confront the thought boldly just to find out the origin of the thought. Was the thought constructed in one’s mind space by the mind itself or was the thought projected into one’s mind space by someone else.
If you have a cell phone, then even if you are locked up in your house, I can influence you by calling your number from my phone. I am not in your house and still I may influence you in that way. Once someone sends a thought to you, if you are attached to this person, then the thoughts will penetrate your psyche for sure. Solving that has nothing to do with yoga. Solving that is the issue of breaking or reducing your attachment to that other person.
Track your thoughts to determine their origin and then work to suit by restricting the association of persons who send undesirable mental messages.
