In settling karmas, one has to understand that there will be no time in the future when all of one’s karmas are effectively solved out. That is not going to happen.
The reason for this is that the material energy is an ongoing tally account which is endless. The whole system feeds on the actions of the living being, and continually makes existential compost out of the effects of actions, which is then automatically reinvested into the world.
Even if the universe comes to an end in the speculated Big Crunch, or even if the universe just fizzes out due to accelerated expansion, still the content energies will remain in suspension until another creation begins and that content is utilized as the base ingredients of the new cosmos.
Again and again everything is ploughed under by nature, and then new combinations are produced.
This means that the aim of liberation in terms of karma has nothing to do with ending off all the consequences of one’s willful and compulsive actions. The objective, the practical one is the removal of one’s person from the realms where these karmas operate. If an environment is permanent or if the essential energy of an environment is absolute, then the alternative is to remove dependent aspects from that situation. The environment with its features will remain as is. What we can do is remove ourselves from the environment. Our karmas will remain here and will be part of this environment forever even if we are not present here to experience the expressions.
A yogi should quietly pack his bags making sure that no attempt is made to carry anything from this creation into another dimension. That is the way to free up the self from particular karmas.

But it's said that the karma follow us wherever we go. It's explained that even if we 'gain' the right to stay in a heavenly realm for thousand years, sooner or later this 'right' will wear out and we will go down to a not so heavenly realm.
Are there, in fact, heavenly realms where one can leave his karmic influences aside for good?

The statement about the heavenly realm is the astral heavenly place which is called Swarga Loka. Beyond that place there are places where one cannot carry the psychological energy which is supportive of materialistic karma.
The karmic energy is native to a particular location and cannot be moved to another dimension necessarily. This provides a real out for us, because otherwise there would be no hope for a final exit from these complexities.
There is a spiritual world which is beyond the range of the astral heavens. There is a spiritual body which is not the astral body.
