Interest Energy in Yoga Practice

One essential feature of spiritual practice is interest. What is your interest?

O, I guess you think you know but perhaps you do not understand.  This interest is the instinctual interest which is in the subtle body. This is not planned interest. Planned interest is the least of our problems in kriya yoga because planned interest can be controlled. If an interest is dependent on my planning it, then it is no problem in yoga

Instinctual interests which are not planned, which you are conscious of or not conscious of, are the ones which should be discovered, checked on with great scrutiny and then altered for the advancement of practice, for pleasing the yoga guru.

And we do not deny that we have this interest. We do not take on a self-power, self-control trip where we feel that we are on it, we are it, and we can just sit down for 30 minutes and we are in the absolute. We admit that we struggle to control these interests. They are not just illusions. These energies direct us and cause us to act impulsively. They have authority over us.

We see them as real energy with real power to cause us to take many haphazard births from here till the end of time. Since they are real we face them like warriors who must fight for their lives.

When you are doing the asana postures with the breath infusion, you can recognize these interest energies. At times when you are doing a certain posture, and the infused energy enters a particular part of the body, you will notice that some psychic shaft of light or a psychic frequency of energy moves from one part of the psyche to another. These are interest energies. Usually they surface in the mind as a forceful inquiry into something or as a forceful attraction to something. These energies are in the psyche, living there like when you are living in a city which has such a large population that you can meet persons whom you never met before if you walk down a busy street day after day.

Some of these interest energies which live in your psyche are unknown to you. You have never seen them. In fact for all your absoluteness and meditative skill, many of these energies remain hidden to you like enemy spies who live in your city and who do not want to be discovered by you.

One set of interest energies is in various parts of the brain. These operate the senses, especially the hearing and visual sense. They pursue things in the physical environment at their leisure. These can move your body against your will. These can stop your body dead in its tracks even if you want to move it forward.

There are other places where interest energies hide, like in the chest of the subtle body, in the breasts of women, in the intestines, in the pubic area, in the thighs.

Asanas postures can help you to discover these energies and to let you inspect them to see what their functions are. Who do these energies serve? According to Tantric information from India, each of these energies is controlled by a supernatural person called a devata or deva in Sanskrit. Supposedly these supernatural entities use your body when they like and at your expense too.

Imagine if you have a car, someone comes when you are sleeping or even when you are awake, takes your car, drives it until the gas is used up and leaves it at the other end of the city. Then you get a call from the traffic department saying that your car is impounded, you must pay a fine and towing fee to get it back.

So these entities who control these interest energies in the psyche are like that. Here I am not talking about anything symbolic. This is not an analogy. These are real people. If someone breaks into a house and steals something, we do not say that it is symbolic. This is like that.

So in yoga, if you are luckily and if you effectively surcharge the subtle form with fresh astral energy, you may see one of these supernatural persons leaving a place in the psyche in disgust. He or she can no longer stay in your psyche because you removed the interest energy which concerned that supernatural person.

Superstition? Well it is that if you want it to be that!
