Grace energy - Swami Hariharananda

Just a few days ago I got to the Miami area and began checking on the practice of one student there who is a disciple of Swami Hariharananda who is deceased. During the night the Swami explained a kriya which he said could be used to get kripa energy from a kriya master. Kripa is a Sanskrit word meaning grace, mercy or bestowal. It is the free giving of austerity energy or grace-encouragement energy.

This type of energy may or may not have any lasting effect, depending on how the psyche of the student responds to it. It is not a given. In some cases students who get this energy show a jump in practice and then that fizzes out and the student digresses. Some other students make the jump and keep going progressing on and on.

For doing this kriya, the student has to reserve time and place for a special meditation where the student’s psyche is open to the influence of specific yoga gurus.

Swamiji drew a diagram, where the student’s head would be open at the top and energy would flow into it from the yoga guru. This energy would go down to the neck and then it would fill up in the head from there.

This feels like if the head is filled with a subtle liquid energy which has a slight bliss aspect and feels like a cooling sensation. It looks like a silverish slow flowing liquid which has tiny sparklets in it.

Swami Hariharananda Giri.

Swami Hariharananda Giri.

Here we see Hariharanandaji in a rare picture. He is looking at the plans for expansion of his ashram in Homestead, Florida, year 2001. To the left is my friend Jimmy, a contractor (in white, holding the plans) and spiritual seeker whom I met at Swami Jyotirmayananda's ashram and whom I brought in for the purpose of building that expansion. He delivered. Behind Swamiji is my good friend, then French Swami and sannyasi Swami Sarveshwarananda. I accompanied him as a Spanish translator abroad.

Notice to Swamiji's left a great sannyasi (in ochre robe). She is unique in that she has been the only female swami ever initiated by Hariharananda and still faithful and in the lineage. She led me into meditation one-on-one on many an occasion, and she is so pure. A German Swamiji, Swami Mangalananda Ji! May the Mother always give her quiet in the mind, purity, calm, and peace!

The Bhagavad Gita states that unique souls incarnate in a family of yogis that double as wealthy parents:

Hariharananda's father was a wealthy landowner, yogi, and Brahmin Haripada Battacharya:

Brahmin Haripada Battacharya

His mother was of the greatest Hindu stock, Navin Kali:

So that it is no coincidence that such a being, born as Rabindranath Battacharya, became, before sannyasa, Brahmachari Robinarayan:

Brahmachari Robinarayan

Does one need to be in a certain stage or level of practice to be able to receive such "Grace Energy"?

And can it be requested by a student who hasn't been practicing for a long time?

Very good question!

It is open to anyone but not every yoga guru deals with students in the same way. This specific kriya is something I just heard about astrally from the Swami and he gave me a demonstration to see what it is, and that is why I could draw the diagram too,

However even though it is open to all, that does not mean that the guru may agree to assist everyone. The student whom I am relating to in this incidence took initiation and vows with this swami. I do not know if the swami would do it with anyone else.

Let us put it this way, everyone on this planet can go out in the morning with a bowl to catch rain water, but that does not mean that it will rain in every part of the planet in the morning. It will only do so in certain parts.

Another example is that this was done to me as a demonstration only. It is not that I got any grace energy from this yoga guru. I did not. I am doing some service for him and in terms of that he did this.

Krishna did show the universal form to Arjuna on request but just that one time.

Would Krishna have showed it if some other warrior requested it?

This transfer of 'Grace Energy' is termed Shaktipat.

Derived from the Sanskrit words sakti (energy or power) and pāta (to fall), Shaktipat is a purposeful transfer of spiritual energy from the higher realms of consciousness and refers to the act of a guru or spiritual Master conferring a form of spiritual ‘Power’ or ‘Awakening’ on a receiver. Shaktipat works on the deep karmic impressions. It often has a profound effect on the life of the recipient, contributing to their spiritual elevation. Indeed, it is said that the very consciousness of the God or Guru enters into the Soul or Self of the recipient. But, the effect of Shaktipat depends upon receptivity of the receiver. The two obstacles are Ego and Intellect.

I have personally experienced it on several occasions and the experience can be ranging from cooling energy with feeling of bliss to an explosion of sorts. The Shaktipat can be delivered by a sound, look, touch of the Guru.
