Focus on Third Eye

One of the most misleading instructions given by kriya teachers to students is the one about always trying to gaze upwards to the third eye. Sri Paramhamsa Yogananda Guruji perhaps carries most of the responsibility for making students take up this practice as soon as they begin kriya procedures.
This is a special practice and if it were not so, then it would be not mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita twice. Still for beginners to use it, is a very misleading because their subtle bodies are not in the proper configuration to take advantage of the inner staring between the eyebrows.

The reason why this practice is misleading is this:
If the third eye is not properly activated, if it is not infused with energy beforehand, then it would not even be turned on in the mystic sense. Hence focusing on it is like turning on an appliance which is not plugged in. You might even hear a little click from a spring in the switch and that would be it. There would be no operative functions because the appliance is not enabled with current.
Formerly before the journey to the West by Paramhamsa Guruji, the yogis did pranayama practice. If you carefully comb through his Autobiography of a Yogi, you will see that he mentions this, even though sometimes he does it in passing as if it has little significance. Actually it has all the value in the world. It is the cause of the successful focus at the third eye.
