Failure to raise kundalini

MiBeloved 5 years ago

Yesterday someone requested that I address the issue of failure to raise kundalini even after doing kundalini yoga exercises for up to one hour. This is bhastrika pranayama practice with asana postures.

There are various reasons why kundalini will or will not rise. There is no one set reason. It is not as simple as that. At this time of year, the sun is giving the most of its energy to the northern hemisphere since we just past the June 21st solstice date. This means that there is an overload of sun energy in reference to moon energy, which has decreased. During the winter that moon energy is maximized and overloaded and then it flips in the summer months.

The full moon was on the 15th and now the moon is phasing out, which means that its influence is decreasing. We are having a greater than 50% of solar energy. This is good in a way and it is bad in  a way.

Moon Phases

For those who do kundalini yoga, but who are not proficient in compressing their hormonal energy, this is not so good since the solar energy might cause that energy to be in dispersal. For raising kundalini that energy needs to be in concentration and compression.

Besides the sun and moon, we have to deal with the association of the persons who we are involved in from day to day. This association may positively or negatively impact us so that it requires much more focus during the exercise to raise kundalini

The main instruction however is to just keep up the daily practice, no matter what, no matter if kundalini rises or not. Do not train yourself to expect kundalini to rise as a sort of payback for doing the exercises. Do not train yourself to be a pleasure-needing result-oriented yogi. If kundalini rises, then that is okay and if kundalini does not , you should still do at least one daily session aggressively.

Let me explain something else. When I came back from the Philippines sometime in 1972, I was at an air base in a place called Baldwin which is just outside Kansas City Missouri. I learned the formal way to asana while I was in the Philippines, This system was given to me by Guruji Arthur Beverford. I was finding that this procedure was not aggressive enough. It so happened that while I was waiting for discharge papers, I took a trip into the Kansas City. Near the university I saw a poster with Yogi Bhajan’s Picture with a notice about kundalini yoga practice. When I saw that I felt that this was the thing I needed. This image is the picture of Yogi Bhajan which was on the poster.

Yogi Bhajan

I attended a class and when I asked if there was an ashram in Denver, the teacher said that there was but he told me that Yogiji was in California or in New Mexico. When I got to Denver some weeks after, I went to the ashram and later I moved into the ashram. Yogi was not there but his senior students were there, a man named Brian and another named Prem Kaur.

Needless to say, we used to have to get up about 3.30 and then clean up and report to the meditation hall. The exercises were gruesome. You had to do postures under supervision while doing breath-of-fire. In some poses you had to keep breathing for about 10 minutes. So it was very aggressive but effective. Later on Yogiji came to the ashram. At the airport, when we greeted Yogiji, he came with a small bag. One of the senior teacher’s wife, asked Yogi to go to baggage claim for the rest of the his baggage but he said to her, “ Baggage? This is my baggage. I travel light.”

Yogi Bhajan was very simple but with exercises, he was strict. You just had to do the exercises twice per day and that was that. There was no promise of happiness or even of kundalini raising. There was just this commitment to do the exercise twice daily. That was it. After a session you did your meditation then and there, either laying down on your back or sitting up with spine balanced.

So that is how I got this practice from him and that is how I am giving this to others. In other words, if you are still wanting happiness as your main objective, then this process is not really for you. But if you have reached a stage where you want to influence the impact of kundalini on the psyche, then this process is for you. You have to be strict. A person cannot bring something like kundalini under his thumb if he is not strict.

Kundalini itself is a very strict force that keeps everything in irons. If you want to get a handle on something like that, then you have to be very strict or you won’t be successful. Kundalini is a cruel dictator, so with an energy like that if you want to get it under control and you want to pampy jampy around, then you will have no success.

Kundalini will force you to have sex, to masturbate, to lie, to cheat, to be disagreeable when it cannot get its satisfactions, to be impulsive, to sell your soul and to betray anyone for some pleasure, to kick whatever or whoever to fulfill its desires, so with an energy like that, if you are not strong and if you cannot muster up the strength to practice daily, then it won’t happen that you will ever get even some fractional influence over it.

And by the way, it is a good idea to meditate and try to reach Yogi Bhajan. I am not monopolizing on my relationship with him or on the process of doing breath of dire. It is open to anyone. See him directly by reaching him in meditation and hear what he has to say directly. In this practice an agent, a via-media or middleman cannot bar you from going to the source. This is an open process because it hinges on your ability to practice.

Now if you cannot muster up the strength to practice, then nothing is wrong. This creation is big. There is room for those who practice and those who can’t. If you are ready today, it is available and if you are not then it is okay.

It is a commitment to Yogi Bhajan to do the practiced daily, irrespective of whether kundalini rises or not. It is like you are his son, and he gave you this daily duty, which you do just because he is the father and he said to do it. Very simple isn’t it!!

More information about Yogi Bhajan:

This section goes on to relate how Yogi Bhajan had accepted Guru Ram Das as his personal guru and eventually had an interaction with him during meditation and chanting where Guru Ram Das gave him a guru mantra, which is Guru, Guru, Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru.

More specific info is not too prevalent in this book, but I did find another teacher mentioned:

Besides studying kundalini and tantric yoga with Sant Hazara Singh, Yogi Bhajan took further training in yoga under Acharya Narinder Dev of Yoga Smriti, who taught hatha yoga and the impact and balance of the nervous system. The latter subject proved invaluable to him in the U.S., where he found most people suffering from disorders of the nervous system.

The world renowned Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh (where masters Swami Chidananda, Swami Vishnu Devananda and Swami Satchidananda studied) served as a spiritual fountain for that flow of eternal truth known as Vedanta philosophy. From this famous source of divine wisdom, Harbhajan Singh was able to fill his heart and mind with inspiration.

And also the mention of this peer of Yogi Bhajans:

Mahan Tantric:

At any one time, there can be only one living Mahan Tantric. While alive, Sant Hazara Singh was the Mahan Tantric. When Yogi Bhajan was studying with him, there had been one other student named Lama Lilan Po. When Santji passed on, the power of the Mahan Tantric was transferred to Lama Lilan Po. In 1971, when he died, this mantle of authority was bestowed upon Yogi Bhajan.

More Information:

Shiav,

Yogi Bhajan did claim lineage with the house of Guru Ram Das, who, yes, was a subtle-bodied guide for YB. So since Guru Ram Das was the Fourth Sikh Guru, then does that trace back to Guru Nanak? My understanding of lineages is limited to be sure. Maybe I misstated that connection above.

As far as Sant Hazara Singh goes, he is referenced in several non-3HO places, like this historical document. (See #2 under the list of names.)

And here.

And here.

There isn’t much to be sure. I found some other references in the Aquarian Teacher training manual that might help you in your research. The caveat, of course, is that this is a 3HO publication. It is definitely biased and feels at times faith-driven in its explanations, especially when it comes to Yogi Bhajan. In any case, there are some facts presented in the midst of things. Here goes

The Lineage of Kundalini Yoga:

Kundalini Yoga also has a lineage. It is a practice that has been experienced and given through enlightened souls for many thousands of years. It is a royal yoga, one that is not intended to be done by only those who are ascetics and withdrawn from the world, it requires a mastery of both the inner dimension of the Self, and the outer expression in the universe. It is that balance between the inner and outer, between the neutral interior Infinity and the active and serviceful exterior that is the signature of Kundalini Yoga.

That’s why even in the early days Kundalini Yoga was often given through the line of kings. King Janaka, in the ancient scriptures, was an early Raj Yogi. This yogic tradition was passed on through that lineage to Guru Ram Das in the lineage of the Gurus of the Sikhs. Guru Ram Das was acknowledged as having the high throne of Raj Yoga, the Takhat, and to passing that blessing to all who would come. Yogi Bhajan acknowledged his teacher as Guru Ram Das and we serve that house. Each of us links to this lineage through a Golden Chain.

Kundalini yoga and the House of Guru Ram Das:

Baba Siri Chand was Guru Nanaks son. He was a great Baal yogi, one who does not age, and still looked youthful even into his 160th year. Under his guidance, the heads of the schools of yoga came and bowed to Guru Ram Das (the fourth Sikh Guru) to seal for the future the lineage of the royal throne of Raj Yoga to come through Guru Ram Das subtle and radiant bodies. Thus kundalini yoga as a raj yoga was brought through the House of Guru Ram Das, and got coloured by the Sikh consciousness, making certain values available to those who teach and study kundalini yoga. The House, or lineage of which we are a part, determines the principles which hold us, apply to us, contains us. It doesn’t mean that all who practice or teach kundalini yoga are Sikhs. It just means that the path of kundalini yoga is held by the House of Guru Ram Das. Some of the core values of the House which were a departure from the ancient yogic path are:

- In kundalini yoga, the teacher does not become a sat guru. The teacher takes the student to the students Infinite Identity, rather than to the teacher’s finite personal identity.

- Kundalini yoga teachings are not secret but open to all.

- Students are encouraged to be householders, not ascetics.

I wonder if you widened your search to include raj yoga, that may help turn up some avenues for you.

Hope this added info helps your investigation.

Namaste & sat nam :)
