Developing Supernatural Perception

Today in a discussion with Bill Lovett, he revealed that he hears things during his meditation session, messages as he termed it.

This is very important. So many little occurrences are important but unfortunately most of us do not know the value of this, neglect this or just simply dismiss this as imaginative crap.

One success I had over the years was my system of always keeping detailed notes about my daily meditation. I recommended this to many persons, some of whom simply look at me as if to say, that they are not going to do anything like that, and that it is silly.

Okay, but I got result from this where very small occurrences, when noted added up to big gains, or giant leaps in time.

Let us go to Patanjali so see a statement he made about hearing practice during meditation:

This is from my book Meditation Pictorial:

Chapter 3 Verse 42

श्रोत्राकाशयोः सम्बन्धसंयमाद्दिव्यं श्रोत्रम्॥४२॥

śrotra ākāśayo sabandha sayamāt divya śrotram

śrotra – hearing sense; ākāśayo – of space; sabandha – relationship; sayamāt – from the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy; divya – divine, supernatural; śrotram – hearing sense.

By the complete restraint of the mento-emotional energy, while focusing on the hearing sense and space, a yogin develops supernatural and divine hearing.

==================

So how does this relate to an American who does not know how to practice the ashtanga yoga process but who is meditating anyway? Well first of all it means that any of the accomplishments in samadhi which are deliberately attained by a yogi, may be experienced by someone who is not following the Patanjali system verbatim.

A person may carry a certain psyche disposition life after life whereby that person exhibits a particular mystic ability which is consistent with a planned achievement by a yogi.

Is Bill carrying either the supernatural or divine hearing sense from his previous life?

I will let you give an opinion about that.

Now here is the kicker.

Patanjali begins his Sutras by stating in the second sutra, that more or less somehow or the other, for meditation one has to shut down the normal operations of the mind. To be sure that we know what that meant, he listed the five operations as

·       Correct analysis

·       Incorrect analysis

·       Imagination

·       Sleep

·       Memory

When these are shut down during meditation by whatever means that works for that person, then meditation can begin in earnest.

Why shut down all mental and emotional perception in the first place?

It is for the reason of killing off the mundane operations of the mind so that the transcendental operations can begin. These are all listed out in chapter 3 of the Sutras.

If you get some supernatural hearing or some supernatural seeing, then that is where you will begin to have confidence in your supernatural self, supernatural body. With that confidence you will make progress and your sensual access to higher dimensions and even to the spiritual world may develop gradually.

But you must also test to be sure that the advice given and indication given by these subtle and super-subtle perceptions does produce the desired result when you put them into practice.

I have whole books like the Brahma Yoga Bhagavad Gita which were produced from hearing a deceased spiritual master dictate them into my head. I have confidence in. By the confidence or faith in this, I keep progressing, the same faith which others find to be troublesome and which for them is totally misleading.

Just imagine what it would be like if suddenly you lost all of the five senses, where they did not function. And take that a step further to consider if we will ever ever develop supernatural perception. Will we remain supernaturally blind, dumb, deaf for the rest of our existence?
