The basic effort in breath infusement is to extract carbon dioxide from the lungs, while infusing oxygen. Carbon dioxide increase in the body has a negative spiritual impact and causes a decrease in psychic perception and an increase in materialistic focus.
It depends on your objective. If you want to increase material focus, then obviously it would not be in your interest to increase the proportion of oxygen in the blood stream. In that case it would be beneficial to increase the carbon dioxide content.
A corresponding feature is there in diet, where a vegetarian diet will result in sharper psychic perception while a flesh diet will increase the materialistic focus.
When doing breath infusement practice, the yogi should first make an effort to draw out the carbon dioxide through the lungs from the various parts of the body. By doing various postures while breathing rapidly, the blood stream in various parts of the body, collects the carbon dioxide from the tissues and by the pumping action of the heart, that is transported to the lungs and is expelled from the body, while oxygen is infused into the blood stream in return.
During rapid breathing the heart beat increases rapidly to keep abreast with the transporting the infused oxygen, and similarly the carbon dioxide is expelled from the system in a very rapid way. Within about 20 minutes, most of the carbon dioxide is removed from the system.
On the subtle side, negative subtle energy is expelled from the system and a higher subtle energy is infused into it. When most of the negative force is pulled out, the kundalini acquires a charge and when this charge is increased further, it sparks and jumps in one direction or the other. By the application of locks, the yogi is able to channel this life force power.
Initially the yogi cannot channel this force and it moves in an instinctive direction without his control, but over time, after practicing for a while, he or she gains some control.
