Generally speaking people who pass away have astral life thereafter which is quite similar to their usual dream existence during their life time. If someone was usually having scary dreams, then upon passing they will have similar experiences since the astral body will be drawn to the same astral territories once it breaks off fully from the physical body.

Those who had mostly positive but just materialistic associations in dreams will go to similar places in the astral world after death.

Those who were in divine associations will go to those places in turn.

Sometimes a person on the basis of religious beliefs and expectations, does experience a flash of heavenly life or a flash where they perceive a divine being like Jesus Christ but for most people that does not last and their subtle body just takes the usual dream form, just as when they were living physically their attention to Christ or whatever Deity or religion was part-time only and their main interest was to promote their status in social life.
