There is much misinformation and just plain ignorance about third eye meditation and the situation of viewing the star in the center of the eyebrows. Most of this happened because of a kriya teacher who became popular in the West and who fooled thousands of people into thinking that just sitting and meditating under his influence they could get the experiences which were described by people like Lahiri Mahasaya.
The plain truth in the matter is that without the austerities which those ancient yogis performed in that life and in their past lives, one cannot attain stability in meditation at the third eye. Of course anyone can imagine that he or she sees this or that at the third eye, but for there to be factual supernatural objects or lights in the head of the subtle body, one has to have gone through the course of austerities which the ancient yogis did.
There is no way around this.
A person can from time to time, through sheer chance and good luck see a supernatural object or light but it will not stay. It will disappear. In fact there are instances where such an object or light appears only once in the lifetime of the meditator and he or she never sees it again.
For certainty in perceiving spiritual objects one has to take up and perfect certain austerities in the ashtanga yoga system. There is no way around it. And yet, one should not be discouraged. One should keep practicing with the idea that after a slew of austerities, one will eventually reach the advanced stages, even if one does not do so during the present life time.
The momentum of practice, will cause a yogi, to again make the effort in future lives. Thus to practice and not succeed is no reason for discouragement. Regard today’s practice as an investment in tomorrow’s effort.

This morning I had a cosmic ahamkara sense-of-identity strike.
This is when one’s local limited sense of identity makes contact with the cosmic pool of undistributed senses of identity (cosmic ahankaras).
At this stage of practice, I cannot make a permanent contact with the cosmic pool. However a spot contact, even a momentary contact is better than no contact at all. Think of a Central Bank in which there is gold bullion, most of the money which is in the country. Think of being able to go there at any time to take whatever amount of gold you need for your expenditures. Think of going there once a year and being able to take out one ounce of gold. Think of never going there at all, and remaining in abject poverty.

The three most important psychic adjuncts are the sense-of-identity, the buddhi intellect orb and the kundalini life force.
Of these the sense of identity is the highest. It is the closest to the core-self. It is practically speaking inseparable from the core-self. It has such a high vibration which is almost on par with the core-self that the core-self can hardly perceive it directly.
Each of the spirits, have one of each of these three adjuncts. However due to usage of the adjuncts they are now dysfunctionally operating. If someone could make contact with the cosmic pools of either of these adjuncts, the particular adjunct will become readjusted to its pristine state.
Out there, there is a cosmic pool of buddhi intellect organs which were not distributed for use by individual spirits. There is a similar pool of kundalinis. There is a similar pool of sense-of-identities. Whenever the individual spirit makes contact with either of these it feels that it has contacted a sea of intense supernatural light. That light has a brilliance which nearly blinds the limited self. It is seen without looking through eyeballs. It is seen with omni-vision.

This morning during meditation I had two momentary contacts with the cosmic senses-of-identity. The first one lasted 3 seconds for the most. The second one lasted for about one second only. Despite the short duration, these are promising signs and are beneficial supernatural perceptions.
In yoga practice, the small events also have importance. Only a silly student fails to take note and to benefit to the max as a result of it.
In between the two contacts, I got an instruction about keeping the core-self in contact with naad sound, using naad as a brace. The instruction was:
Do not run from naad, remain bracing naad no matter what. Whatever is seen or not seen should not cause you to abandon the support of naad. Keep the stability of contact with naad.

When the individual sense-of-identity of a limited self makes contact with the cosmic sense-of-identity, it is really happening the other way around. This means that the cosmic sense of identity is what makes the contact. The limited self does not do it.
The cosmic pool has to reach out to the limited self. The effort of the limited self to reach out to the cosmic pool is a sheer waste of time. What the limited self can do is to reach the plane where the cosmic pool may reach out to it. That is the all it can do.
The limited self must first move to a plane of existence which is the level where the cosmic sense of identity exists and then there is the contact. It feels that the limited self’s psyche was touched by a bolt of light coming from a vast pool of blinding white supernatural light.
In the case of the sense of identity, the angle of contact is usually very high up as seen in the diagram below.
