Could you please give some direction in how I can either increase my astral consciousness or at least become aware of it when my physical body sleeps? I am unable to recall my dreams and so I feel that I do not have any.
MiBeloved's Response:
The cause of your lack of astral consciousness is your focus over in the material world.
This is happening because your mind is partitioned into two parts: One for spiritually related knowledge and experience and the other for materialistic social concerns.
The side of your mind which is concerned about spiritually related knowledge and experience has a slanted approach where it tries to make spiritual experience serviceable on the material plane of life. It is not satisfied with spiritually related experiences for its own sake. It seeks to apply whatever you manage to cull out of your meditation and spiritual associations to material circumstance. This tendency is the main reason for the lack of astral recall.
Desire is limited. Deep-rooted tendency over-rides or supersedes desire, such that if I desire something but my deep rooted energy has no interest in that, I will never realize that desire even if the fulfillment was offered to me.
The other side of your mind which is concerned with materialistic social concerns is a very real factor in your existence. This side of the mind will not indulge in anything which is not serviceable socially in the material world, because it has an intuition that tells it, that whatever is not serviceable in the material world is worthless in the final analysis in terms of the status of the family.
Suspecting that spiritual aspirations will lead down into the gutter of poverty, this part of your mind has rightly decided not to participate in anything but investments into the social material world. It has no intention of clinging to what it feels are spiritual hopes and fantasies.
The desire to be conscious during an astral projection or just after the projection or at least when the projection is ended, can be fulfilled as soon as you are able to deal with your mind.
One thing you have going against you is your arrogance, in that you feel that if you desire something you can definitely do it. This arrogance is directed to material nature which will fight you tooth and nail just to show you who controls this.
No desire can be fulfilled without the cooperation of physical and psychic nature. Nature has to help you with this. Without a sense of humility towards nature, it will not be possible for you to break this.
If you turn about in your psyche you may see several locked doors where you have no access to certain parts like your subconscious for instance.
Who locked these doors?
Did God lock them?
I feel that material nature shut those doors just to show that it is in charge.
Maybe you should make peace with material nature and show your appreciation toward it for all it has done for you thus far. Maybe material nature was your mother, your faithful nanny, and you have just never considered expressing your appreciation to her. Give this some thought.

The pragmatic approach to improving dream recall usually works well.
Twelve Tips for Improving Dream Recall by Rick Bouchard
Source: http://www.improverse.com/ed-articles/ed3-1bo1.htm
1. Develop a relationship with your "unconscious." When you tell your unconscious ("psyche") that you want to hear what it has to say......it speaks! Sometimes, a simple interest in the dream world will stimulate dream recall.
2. Go to bed early. Getting a full night's sleep and having a clear head in the morning will help with dream recall. 3. Before going to sleep, affirm: "Tonight, I will remember a dream..."
4. Have a paper, a pen, and a subtle light by your bed. This minimizes the obstacles you may experience upon waking to record, minimizes the movements you must make, and makes the job easier. A subtle light will not fully wake you.
5. Let yourself wake up in the middle of the night. Drink extra water, the night before, to assure that you will have to get up in the middle of the night, where you can often catch yourself dreaming.
6. Set aside quiet time between "waking up" and "getting up." Savor the twilight,...that space one teeters between when they are half awake and half asleep.
7. No alarm clocks. Alarm clocks can decrease recall because they allow you no "twilight time." You are suddenly thrust into an awake state. Instead, try going to bed earlier so you wake up and savor that quiet time before the alarm does go off. Meanwhile, hope fully, memories of the dream images will surface in your silence.
8. Do not move upon awakening. Dreams are best recalled by lying still and letting the dream images surface. Ask "psyche" to let whatever you dreamt come to your conscious mind.
9. Record just a key work or an image. If you can't remember the whole dream, write down a fragment, a mood, a feeling. You can certainly discover meaning in dream snippets and fragments.
10. Tell your dream to a trusted other or a dream partner. Saying them out loud can make them feel more real and can bring on an "aha!" (that light that goes on when we realize something). As author Jeremy Taylor says, this ("aha") is a reliable touch stone of whether or not you are onto an accurate interpretation. You are the only one who can say for sure what a dream means for you.
11. Tape recording dreams can help you get closer to the experience and feelings you had when you actually had the dream. It reflects back to you what you sounded like, and perhaps were feeling, (in the middle of the night) as you recorded the dream.
12. Experiment with how you remember, record, analyze, and explore your dreams; try drawing, poetry, clay, and so on. Weave them into your day. Dreams can be the source of much inspiration, wisdom, and joy.

Marcia Beloved's comment:
I am not the original inquirer, however I can relate to having very little dream recall and virtually no astral projection skills. I have not, in recent years been focused on this nor do I feel that I can do it just because I might desire to. Because dream recall does not come easily, I figured it was best to let the sleeping dog lie, and let dream recall and astral projection evolve naturally as a result of yoga and meditation. Let them come in their own time. However such a defeatist attitude will probably not bear fruit.
Upon reading Michael's reply, I thought: "Maybe a good approach would be to do pratyahar practice intensively. If focus on the external social world is the main problem, then pratyahar, withdrawal of the sensual energies, during meditation, with an intent to withdraw social, material concerns, seems to be a good starting point. Incorporate sensual withdrawal, with an underlying motivation to increase subtle perception."

I also think that might be a good approach.

Referring to some that have low dream recall:
I think reading the lucid dream literature and applying its strategies will help some increase their dream recall. As simple as that. I don't think the problems is that people focus too much on social reality or material concerns per se, I think the problem is that people can't unfocus or detune from material reality or social concerns. Best known as good and bad stress.
I think these people who have difficulty with dream recall don't even know what deep relaxation actually feels like. They might think they do, but they don't. Regardless how good you think your body is operating, if it's stuck in a pattern of low or no dream recall shifting out of that pattern will increase dream vividness. I am not going to get into the science of it here but the reader may like to look it up.
Sometimes you have to look outside your self sustained psychological box and do things differently. Some will be surprised how a different philosophy at the right time boasts your natural ability as opposed to your hard tested failed philosophy that somehow you still feel you need to stay true to.
This is also a self reminder to me.

Thanks for those tips, Jettins.
I may need to incorporate something other than what I've done, in order to get ahead in this area.
Periods of my life when I recalled more dreams, were usually when I was getting less sleep or getting up in the middle of the night to exercise.
Another consideration is the budgeting of energy for all of these essential accomplishments.....
