Comment to 'USA and Africa Today'
  • Well, Biden also just the other day expressed his approval for he African Union to join the G20, a goal they have been wanting.

But these visits by US presidents (to the exception of Trump - of course) don’t really accomplish much in the end. They appear as a faint effort to counter Chinese expansion, and now also Russian to some extent. They are eyeing those natural resources and rare minerals for their great need for development.

These symbolic flybys don’t represent a genuine interest in the old continent. So much more would be needed. But by all means, he ought to come check things out. However, African leaders have learned of accepting alternatives to US support/ model/ dominance. There is even a wave of push back against former colonizator France, in the search for autonomous governance, and somehow total disappointment in France’s relationship.
