I would highly recommend the reading of Appendix II (pp. 461-495) as it gives a detailed description of citta in its forms of being infiltrated by kilesas and in its state of absolute purity.  

Overall a biography is not academic in nature but there is a really good glossary following the appendixes. It is, however, exceptional, in terms  getting close to the fiery, wieldy energy and insight which leads to freedom.
