In his case, I'd speculate that the subtle body is only relatively trapped. 

Due to the preeminence of the life force which is neurotically and desperately attached to the body form, in order to succeed in the intermeshing and intercourse with material nature, then typically this trap is evident even in absence of a coma.

A subtle body is trapped based on its overall condition/ state or content energies/ consciousness.
